Thanks. I have removed the entry for York but left Peterborough as it is.

I've just tried the numbers 01904 682100 and 01733 297600 and they are not NU but answer with the familiar female Jobcentre Plus voice saying that the number has now changed to 0845 604 3719.

By the end of April, the individual switchboards at Jobcentres up and down the country will have gone and replaced with the central one on the premium 0845 number. In many cases, other extensions at each Jobcentre can be reached by changing the last digit or two.

There are a number of other entries for Jobcentres and some have 0845 604 3719 listed and some 0845 606 0234. They are all pretty much interchangeable. You will have to search for
jobcentre
as the company name.

By the end of April 2010, the local switchboard numbers for all Jobcentres will have been discontinued. All calls will be directed to the new central switchboard whose number is 0845 604 3719. The number 020 8465 8604 presently goes through to the same place as the 0845 number and is therefore a suitable alternative for JobCentres in all areas.

It's up to you if you wish to follow the guidance below to find a direct number at your local Jobcentre. I suggest that if time is of the essence, then you might be better off using the 020 number.

Should the 020 number not work (be aware that it can be not recognised when they are closed), then please do post on this forum thread to let us know, so we can stop others wasting their time trying it. Alternatively, if you do use it sucessfully, then we would like to hear from you as well.

Guidance for finding an alternative directly to your Jobcentre

The best advice I can offer with regards contacting your local Jobcentre is that it may well have a group of sequential numbers, of which the 'old' published switchboard number is the first and that usually ends 00.

For example, the main number for Bexley Heath Jobcentre was 020 8218 4700 and this now has a recording redirecting to the 0845 number. The next number, 020 8218 4701, has been found to get through to that branch.

If you change the last digit from a 0 to a 1 and get no answer, or perhaps get through to a fax machine, then try 2, 3 and so on. Remember, these will probably go through to direct lines within the particular office they relate to and if someone does answer, he or she may refuse to put you through. In addition to the number being someone's direct line, it could be the phone in a room such as a meeting room or a fax machine.

Jobcentre Plus published a spreadsheet (available via WhatDoTheyKnow.com) which lists each branch, giving the date that each was due to change over to the main 0845 number. For those that hadn't done so at the time of its compilation, which is the majority, they have the old 01/02 number listed. Use this and change its last digit as I suggested above.

If you have any questions or require any help with this, then post here and someone will help you. Where you find a suitable alternative, then please post it here and I will see that it is added to the database for our visitors to use.

Hi, Thanks for the excellent advice. I tried the new centralised 0845 number but you do get to hold for a long while and as I'm not on BT and prefer to use up contract minutes I tried changing my original direct dial number for Hitchin Jobcentre Plus.
It was originally 01462 662500 until the switch over.
I changed last digit to a 1 and got a fax, I changed to 2 and got a fax, but changing to 3 got me straight through to the office.
Brilliant and well done

I have found the entry you have submitted to the database and verified it. I see that the spreadsheet I referred to in my advice, published by Jobcentre Plus, refers to this particular Jobcentre as "Letchworth", as too does the Direct.gov.uk website. I have therefore listed it as such.

You listed the number 0845 608 8583 alongside it, but the main number for Jobcentre Plus branches is 0845 604 3719. I have therefore replaced it with that. What is the 0845 number you supplied for?

The "old" number for Banbury is 01295 455000. The 01865 one is for Oxford branch. Can you clarify?

Well this is the info from the directgov website:
Quote:
Banbury Jobcentre Plus
Crown Buildings
Southam Road
Banbury
Oxfordshire
United Kingdom
OX16 2EX
Telephone: 0845 604 3719
Textphone: 01865 445022
Jobcentre Plus Office

Note the Textphone number. I see your point though, it is an Oxford number guess they must either route it or have ported it to the Banbury office. Easy enough to do. I called it the other day and did get through to someone that said 'Hello, Banbury Job centre...'. Not sure if it gets through to the same person as the 0845 number though, but it was the Banbury JS.

The geo number for Cannock is 01543 461265, it's still listed on the Job Centre web site and hasn't been changed to one of the 0845's yet.

However for Stratford-Upon-Avon that has and it only lists an 0845 not like for Banbury where it lists a normal geo number for the 'textphone'.

To find the number of a Job Centre go to http://los.direct.gov.uk/Default.aspx and enter a postcode.

Hi Lenny. Thanks again for this.

The Textphone number is one way in, as it were, but you can also find others on the Excel spreadsheet on WhatDoTheyKnow. This gives 01789 303830 for Stratford-upon-Avon and also says that the Cannock number was due to change to the 0845 one on 21 April, so perhaps worth trying that again; I think it will bite the dust soon.

I can confirm that the Seacroft, Leeds number has switched over the 0845 switchboard. Thanks to this thread I've found the new phone number to be: 0113 2148501.

Also, 0113 2148587 will put you through the top floor, for other things than just signing on.

Thanks for this thread! It saved me some pennies. Smiley
