From Computeractive magazine:-
BT to launch super-fast Wi-Fi phone boxes - but only in London (for now).
From next year you will be able to use fast Wi-Fi phone kiosks, but only in London. BT is installing 750 "ultramodern" kiosks called Links, throughout the capital.
They will offer landline and mobile calls, access to maps, phone charging via USB ports and speedy internet access to people within range - up to 1Gbps, which BT claim will be the UK's fastest public Wi-Fi.
All the services will be free. BT says this will be funded by adverts on the Links' screen.
The kiosks will also have sensors to record data, such as air and noise pollution, outdoor temperature and traffic conditions. Local communities and councils will be able to access this data on devices connected to the internet.
The company hailed the futuristic kiosks as "the next evolution of our public payphone service". Hundreds of BT's existing phone boxes - though none of the iconic red boxes - will be replaced by the Links, which take up less space.
The first Links - up to 100 - will be installed in the London borough of Camden.
Bt says that after the kiosks have been set up in London, it will extend the scheme to "the other great cities across the UK".
