They probably make up for it by increasing your gas and electricity tariff!

That's Ok - at least you can then do FAIR price comparisons. As it is, if some companies are keeping costs low by covert 0870xxx charges on all enquirers, that is unfair.

All I ask is TRANSPARENCY - let them tell customers if they are using 0870 that the cost of using this number is about 16 times more than if it were 01xxx !
