Title: child tax credit geo number - Inland Revenue
Post by DaveM on Sep 27th, 2004 at 1:25am
BensonUK originally requested the alternative Geo number for Inland Revenue Child Tax Credit 0845 3003900.

It was pointed out that these were given under our List of Alternative Numbers . . . and that doing a number search at this page would have given the choice of two numbers (as Hienz points out below it was actually 3).   :-/

If you ring the 02890 808316 number you are told that you are ringing the international customers line and although we will deal with your claim this time will WILL REFUSE to answer your call next !!!!

I complained to Trevor the team leader for team 2.  Told me that this is NOW POLICY and all UK residents MUST USE the 0845 numbers.  I asked for this policy to be confimed in writing and he said he could not confirm it in writing.  However lady rang me back with in 48 hrs again stating policy.  I again demanded a copy of this policy in writing so I could formally complain to my MP.

No luck !!

SO if you use this number you are calling from outside the UK when you use it

I'll VOTE for any party who will BAN 0870 & 0845 telephone numbers or passes law that is a person asks for a geo number they have to give you one LOL

Would they be able to tell if you are inside the UK if you block your CLI?

No, if you block your CLI it will show as a 'private' call and the receiving party cannot tell where the call is coming from. That would be the norm for many calls from overseas, although I do notice that here in the USA, calls from Europe increasingly show the CLI as +442701231234, for example. Calls from some other countries eg Australia just show 'private'. It all depends on the CLI system that is in use - they do vary between countries.

However, bottom line, apart from the nerdy stuff - if you block your CLI, they will have to assume it is an overseas call (and if they ask, lie  ;)  )

I don't think that's true in some rare cases.  I've read here and elsewhere that calling a geo that was meant for overseas that they are sometimes aware of it.  This could be that the geo number is not an exact alternative that the NGN points to or their exchange can tell the call was made within the UK but not our number.

This fails though when ringing from a mobile with number withheld because you are able to get through without a problem from what I've observed.
