Title: University of Southampton Accommodation Post by -=Dave=- on Oct 5th, 2004 at 11:23pm
Does anyone know the geographical number for the southampton university halls of residence? The 0870 number is:
0870 357 **** and is provided by NTL. I have a few numbers from Ofcom to try tomorrow and will post back. Any input would be appreciated. Dave ~ Thread title edited by Dave |

The solution that I have come across for contacting my daughter in Exeter University is to use 3U who charge to same for 0870 calls as national ones (2p/1p/1p). See my post at

That's great for Exeter, where there's little hope of finding a geographical number due to the VoIP arrangement. Otherwise, 1p a minute is still 60p for an hour, compared to 5.5p an hour with BT option 1. |

I do believe that there is a geographical number as opposed to a VoIP system. The reception there led my friend to believe that they do have another number but can't give it out, for obvious reasons as NTL wouldn't be too pleased. I just need to find the right number...and so my quest goes on. I am determined not to pay NTL a penny!!!!!!!!!

I know because of the likelyhood of these lines having no geographical alternative I have been shot down for suggesting geographical alternatives, but here goes. If you think it might have a geo number, check the Numbers administered by Ofcom page. Download the geographical section for 02 numbers and find which prefixes have been allocated to NTL (those beginning 023 80 which is Southampton).
There are quite a few alocated to NTL, most dated 5/99. However there are a couple allocated in 2002 which may be more likely. :-/ |

If it's NTL, I'm sure there will be a geographical number! It was a different company at Exeter, and they had some special permission from JANET to trial the VoIP system.
The only trouble with NTL is if they are using one of those funny numbers where the local number starts with 0 or 1, that BT don't you dial from a normal phone. It's definitely worth trying the numbers on Ofcom's list! |

I will not give up! I have tried all the numbers ofcom publish, infact I tried every number from 02380 00 **** to 02380 99 **** which I believe to be every southampton number possible! However, the halls reception did say that there is "another way" of direct dialing to the room phone but can not give us the number. At the moment I am dialing reception on a 02380 number and asking (persuading) them to put me through, however I fear they will eventually say no more!

Maybe the number you are looking for is not a Southampton number. ntl have four allocations in Winchester: 01962 62 01962 63 01962 64 01962 66 Good luck! |

Just tried this and it works :D
Firstly cheers guys :) The 02380 numbers are not for halls. It is the winchester ones. 01962 62 01962 63 01962 64 01962 66 these include the first digit of your extension.... eg: ext: 44000 external number becomes: 01962 644000 Works for me :) |

Hi All, Well it would seem that quite a few of you have been having problems trying to work out the landline numbers for the Wessex Lane Halls at the University Of Southampton. Well, fear not, as help is at hand. 8) I have lived in the various halls at this university for the last couple of years, and I have worked out the external landline number for Wessex Lane Halls as coming through Winchester, and so the area code starts with : 01962 and NOT 02380 (as is the code for Southampton) once you have dialed 01962, this should be followed by the numbers 62, 63, 64, or 66. Then this should be followed by the extension, for example 44000 So the entire number in this case would be : 01962 644000 This works for me, and hopefully it will work for you too. Give it a go, and save your money ;) Personally, Im happy to help, and Im happy that this website is here. all the best, codecracker 8) |

I have moved your post to the existing thread. If you search the database you will find three entries. One is for the University of Winchester and two for Southampton. The reason Winchester comes up is because the two systems are linked, as is discussed above. Your incoming number will be a Winchester one, and I am interested to find out which it is, being as there's two suggestions for Southampton. It may help if you provide your internal extension number as I am given to believe that the 01962 number is linked to that and not the 0870. Assuming you have a 5 digit extension number, then I believe that it will be 01962 6 + ext. Please let us know which it is. |

My daughter has just moved into a flat in Gateley Hall, but only has a number that is 0870 357 6*** (last three digits removed), so if anyone has a geographic solution that would be gratefully appreciated ;)

Hello and welcome to Say No To 0870! Have a look back on this thread and you should find what you are looking for. You will probably have to ask her what her internal extension number is. Also see my post immediately before yours. Please give some feedback about what you find. |
