I became aware of this scam just after BT announced the removal of the BT Standard tariff. It became apparent that there was more to the change than met the eye.

A line rental increase of 43%, short evening and weekend calls costing more than daytime ones along with the promotion of 'free' services like BT 1571, and ofcourse 084x/087x excluded from all these 'benefits'. :-X

I think that it calls in to question the effectiveness of the regulation. Premium rate numbers have been allowed to be used by scammers who plant internet dialers on victims' computers or send them email or text messages telling them they've won a prize. Why hasn't it been policed from day 1? This is fraud and wouldn't be allowed if it were a credit card. So why has the regulator allowed it on PRNs?

I'm on the ICSTIS mailing list and got the email yesterday about the latest fines and so on being imposed, I saw the name on there a couple of times of two companies which I can't stand (2ergo / norbridge) so started Googling, a click and another click and I was here.

I heard about saynoto0870 from the article in the Daily Mail, I am so taken with this site I have emailed everyone I know with a link! I have made a list of all the numbers I use frequently (you can copy & paste the table into word easily), printed it off and stuck it by my phone. I have an all inclusive package from onetel, so all geographical calls are free. Keep up the good work, and spread the news well done to the people responsible for the site!! :D

I found your site on Google, I had long been a follower of the cause!

Last year I had a reason to ring DVLA on numerous occasions, but I refused to ring them on 0870, never have and never will.

I had a site "Rip-off 'phone numbers" but closed it down when I saw yours.

I had at least one success http://www.pervance.com/Facts/Facts_1/Comments/hotels.html  They had an 0870 numer before they altered the ad.


The trouble I think is that it is getting a bit dangerous to take on the powers that be now. They know that we are against them. The new directory was delivered to my door on Sunday. It clearly states that 0870 costs "Up to 7.91 pence a minute".  This is the tactic they will use to sue one of us and then our case is gone.

It is no use complaining that they did not tell any one that they had put it down to 7.51 pence.

Likewise I have been aware of the scam for a very, very long time ever since it was possible for me to route calls with other carriers like AXS Telecom using their indirect access code (1615) in about 1997/1998.  From that point on I could make national daytime geographic uk calls for 2p per minute with AXS but 0990/0870 was costing me 7.9p per minute.  I also then noticed that BT would not even allow Friends & Family discounts for 0870 numbers and that this was deliberate policy and not a mistake.  It also seemed a further outrage when BT Options 2 and 3 were launched but 084/087 calls were excluded from these call allowances.

So I have been aware for many years of the issue and have complained regularly to the BT Chairman's Office  and OFTEL only to get the response that 0870/0845 call routing systems were so expensive to develop that they had special extra costs.  So strange that the same BT now say they could afford to carry 0845 and 0870 calls at no extra cost if Ofcom requires this.

When BT's corporate greed finally caught up with them by trying to get all their CPS customers to have to pay a massively increased line rental to subsidise BT's dumbest customers (those too lazy to route their calls elsewhere) that was really the last straw.  I couldn't believe that BT were actually dumb enough to propose this (from that moment the writing was obviously on the wall for 0845 and 0870) and even more gobsmacked when the supine Ofcom said to their friends at BT that this was no problem.  I realised then that Ofcom were either totally incompetent or more likely simply in bed with BT.

Its disappointing that some of our forum moderators have only been aware of this issue for such a short time, although obviously encouraging that they have at least had the energy to go and do something about it.

I bacame aware of the original dbjnet site in early 2003 via the Moneysaving Expert site (Martin Lewis), because Daniel posted on the Moneysavingexpert forum and gave his url.

Very happy new member - found out about you from the Motley Fool - another brilliant website. Am introducing SAYNO to the CAB where i work. Lots of our clients cannot afford to make calls to their creditors so we do it for them and this will save us a lot on our phone bill - a large expense  for us with our very limited funds.

Personally I could strangle BT for still behaving like a state monopolist in most parts of the country without a cable phone line alternative (i.e. all of the rural parts and all of the smaller towns).

Where BT has competition on carrying the calls for 01 and 02 calls prices have fallen dramatically but where there is not competition because it has a near monopoly on terminating most of the calls (i.e. 0870) prices have not fallen.

Ditto my BT line rental is £168 a year including Caller Display and Call Waiting that are Free of Charge on my no line rental Pay as You Go mobile but the standing charge for my metered water supply is by comparison jusr £20 a year.  Now do you think that £168 a year just to keep that thin piece of 20 year old copper wire connected to the exchange before I make a single call is value for money?

Also why is it that BT is allowed to sell wholesale line rental to its competitors at a price no better than that which it charges its own domestic telecoms consumers (i.e £10.50 per month)?  Normally wholesale prices are at least 50% of the retail price, bearing in mind that BT won't have to provide customer service, billing, etc, etc, to these customers?

I entirely agree, but that is what you get when you "privatise monopolies"! The whole problem goes back to the way in which the previous Conservative government privatised so many state monopolies, without due diligence, in their desparation to get the funds into the government coffers, to conceal the true state of the UK's finances under their economic mismanagement and nepotism. Not that I think the present government are any better, in fact they are worse, because the fundamental problem we have in the UK is that we do not have true democracy and as a result we now get a succession of corrupt and incompetent governments!

Look at your water bills this year; another example of the same problem. Look at what has happened with the raiilways. Any school boy studying elementary Economics knows that monopolies are a bad thing. If you pass a state monopoly into the hands of private investors you will get what you deserve. That is what corruption and stupidity leads to.

I am not sure however that this topic is the correct place for this discussion. Dave please move if you feel it would be better?

By the way I have no problem with my water bill.  Even if they charged 50% more for the stuff it would still be a bargain compared to BT.

Are you metered for your water though?

If not get one straight away as I think you will find that your water bill will be slashed, even if you have a wife and 2 kids.

Of course the South West is a lot less densely populated which might result in it costing a lot more to supply H2O.

I first heardf about SAYNOTO0870.COM from a salesman from The Utility Warehouse.  I often phone Canada/USA and had been using "Telediscount" using an 0845 number which was my "best friend number"  This cost under 1p per minute evenings and weekends.  

When approached by a company offering cheaper phone services I always ask how much it would cost to call North America.  This time, I also continued on and moaned abount 0870 numbers.  That's when the salesman told me about SAYNOTO0870.COM .

Thanks to him I am now using 1899.

Read about you in Which? mag (May 2005, p.58). A letter from a reader ('Landline Tip') gave details, prompted by an article in the March issue ( 'Breaking the Code', p.33) about 0845 and 0870 numbers. Which? is campaigning for call centres to publish 01 numbers alongside 0845 numbers and for those using 0870 numbers to make it clear how much they cost and how long they're likely to last.

I use mail order catalogues quite a lot (usually by phone cos we don't have broad band yet and it's a bit slow) and have just found landline and FREEFONE numbers for all of them! Keep up the good work!

I was told of your site by an NTL telephone operative after I complained and complained about the cost of the many calls I had had to make to 0870 numbers.  I noticed that many heard of you via the Daily Mail - I have told many friends/family/acquaintances about the site and no-one had heard of it - they must all be Sun readers like me I'm afraid!!!  So maybe the Sun needs to publish something about it (if it hasn't already - although no harm in mentioning it again eh!).

With the Sun being New Labour's tame mouthpiece to the masses and with Gordon and company being some of the worst abusers of 0870 numbers, there's not a lot of hope of that ever happening!

I heard about this seemingly very useful site on the Bank Action Group site.

That one came, believe it or not, from the betfair forum, where there is currently a massive thread about claiming back bank charges.

Strange how one thing leads to another! I joined this organisation yesterday and I've already arranged to change to a cheaper electricity supplier.

Being fairly hard-bitten and cynical, I'm keeping an eye out for pitfalls, but, so far, things have been very easy to do.

The bottom line, of course, will be the critical test! So far, so good.

I take it you mean, the cost of calling your banks and utilities etc from your NTL line, rather than NTLs customer service.

I used to have NTL freedom through a BT line, and had to call their call centre a few times to complain.  Luckily it was via a freephone number, rather than their preferred 0870 number which is just as well considering it took half an hour to answer the calls!!

But when it came to cancelling the service, they had blocked all non 0870 access, and an e-mail request to close my account was greeted with a request to call their 0870 number.  During my cancellation process, the salesman tried to stop me leaving, but I explained that as I'm paying for an 0870 call, I'd rather keep the cancellation process as short as possible!!

Thankfully I don't have to deal with NTL again, but there are still companies out there that despite this site, you can't get around calling their 0870 number.  At least with sales enquiries you can decide to take your business elsewhere, but if you're calling customer services with a complaint that you do need fixing, then it won't bother them if you give up after being on hold for half an hour!!

But the alternatives are listed in the database on this website:-

And I would defy you to list any ISP who does not have 0845 or 0870 quoted as their main contact number for tech support.

But what counts is if there is an alternative to the 0870 (as there is here) and if the tech support is answered quickly (which it is in Newnet's case) and if the staff have a brain (which they do in Newnet's case) are not in India (which they are not in Newnet's case) and are open all evening on Weekdays (as they are in NewNet's case).

On the face of it, "Madasafish" seemed every bit as good, if not better, than NEW, but may I ask why your research led you to favour the one you mention?

I do spend hours online, but don't download much of anything really. Perhaps I don't need " the biggest and the best".

Anyway, any advice would be gratefully received, as I know as little about broadband as I do about building igloos!

Newnet is one of a handful of remaining providers that gives you full speed broadband at the speed you think you are paying for most of the time (Zen is another but charge the earth by comparison).

Most of the other major providers like AOL, Wanadoo, Plusnet, Tiscali especially go for the maximum 50:1 contention ratio they are allowed at peak times and their own backbone network is also hevaily overloaded so you might be getting 100k or 200k speed at 7pm in the evening even if you get 8MB at 3am.  With NewNet you get full speed and outstanding customer service.  Madasafish's headline price of £11.99 rises to £17.99 after 6 months.  Newnet remains at £12.99 for their 2Gb service permanently.  Or you could consider the Freedom2Surf product with 5Gb allowance for £14.99 or 20Gb for £19.99.  They also throw in free connection.

I suppose if you are a new customer you are going to be influenced by offers of free connection but don't forget that they lock you in for a year as a consequence to what, in the case of Tiscali especially, would be an utterly diabolical service you would want to escape as soon as you could!

I am at home 7 days a week and use web surfing and emailing many hours a day and I only average 2Gb or 3Gb a month.  I even watch 2 or 3 hours of video clips a month although no more than that.  If you were only at home in the evenings and at the weekend you would definitely be under the 2GB allowance.

NewNet are the kind of ISP who bend over backwards to be helpful.  Other ISPs either have sulky morons or handle your call in India!

I'm on free2serve dial up at present and, I have to say, it's not bad. Broadband would be better and easier, I believe.

I don't mind taking chances in life, but I loath being ripped-off bc of my ignorance. I much prefer to ask about others' experiences first. I can always change later, if things don't actually suit me.

I'll be giving the one you mentioned a go, eventually, when I get myself properly organised. Any important feed-back - negative or positive - will be sent into the forum, of course.

I heard about this by word of mouth - best  handy site ever - i run a home office and been using mobile , skype because i have an all inclusive package and these stupid 0845 and 0870 and 0871 numbers when you get though and everyone you speak to puts you on hold and now i got this site my bills our going to come don from 100GBP a month which is all the 0845 and 0870 numbers we have to dial to 0.00 because of all the inclusive packages we have good on you! so if your in the warrington area at any time i buy you a drink the least i can do and say thanks and I heard this of a work collgue of mine wish hed tol me earlier!

This morning I had the horrible experience of contacting the so-called "customer care" line of a major UK domestic appliance manufacturer (why be coy? Whirlpool) who only advertise an 0980 number. Usual runaround, nested menus, foul music, wrong connections, hang-ups etc. Then I remembered that www.moneysavingexpert.com had recommended this site. Found Whirlpool's standard number in seconds, so I could persevere, keep hassling them till I got through to the right person, registered my complaint, and eventually got my query dealt with satisfactorily. I'm hugely impressed with you all - thank you so much! I will evangelise this site as often as I can.

I actually came across this site when I was trying to find a geograhical number for a company (can't remember which one now like) and that's also when I learned that these numbers can earn the company using them a revenue (mostly 087x).

From this site, I then found moneysavingexpert but I can imagine that most forum members heard of this site via MSE.

Article in The times, caught my eye straight away, its just what I have been looking for. I hope it prompts companies to return to the use of standard ttelephone numbers.

Welcome.

Funny you should mention that show as their contact number is an 0871 number costing 10p/min from a BT landline.  As with everything these days, costs from other providers, payphones and mobiles can cost more (upto 40p/min from some mobile providers).

BBC were being hypocritical by mentioning this site when they use 0870 numbers almost exclusively but The Wright Show beat the BBC on this occasion by having a 0871 number - the most expensive number to ring bar 09x numbers.

Some guys in Australia were looking for cheap DIDs in the UK so family could call them without making an international call and there is a number of providers offering 0845 and 0870 numbers to voip for free, but geographical numbers are cheaper to call.

I saw the article in the Daily Mail and having had (in my view) a scam performed on me by Royal Mail, who forced me to use their 0870 number and then made sure I spent 5 minutes and more on it to process the data, I have been looking for a friendly site ever since.

Just told someone at Virgin Media Call Centre and they said they will put it on the notice board, they were looking into how I had been charged £80 for calls that should have been inclusive... (All Geographical Alternatived :-D)

i have known of it for some time and use it quite alot. it is a great site and well woorth using. my daughter told me about it, and uses it herself.

I was signing a petition on an environmental issue on the drowning street site and found your petition whilst browsing around. Signed that immeadiately then followed the link to here.

This issue has been winding me up ever since I signed up for a calls inclusive package a few years ago but for some bizarre reason that I cannot explain I never looked on the net to see if there was anything that could be done.  :-/(I look on the net for everything else!)

I first heard about SAYNOTO0870 from the Daily Mail, which had an article about rip-off charges about a year and a half before I joined.  :D

:) I found out about the site from my ex wife, have been using it ever since and my phone bill has gone down, also signed up to 1899 via this site and where she lives in Wales and I live in Surrey it has saved on the calls to the kids.

I received my talktalk bill yesterday and the only call charges were 0870 numbers (I am on the free UK and most international calls tariff).  I fully appreciated that under this deal I would be charged premium rates for 0870 etc numbers and try hard to find alternatives myself, but never thought to look for this site.  When I was checking for who was on the end of the calls I had made, your site popped up on Google and, as they say, the rest is history.  Brilliant idea BTW.

I first heard of your site in The Sunday Times money section about 18 months or two years ago.

I called Virgin Media concerned how much our bill was and the chap in the call centre told me about this website. I've saved a good tenner in the last 2 weeks alone calling for quotes on various things and sorting stuff.

I First heard about Saynoto0870 on BBC Working Lunch it is the best information I have heard for a long time.

I use this site on a daily basis, keep up the good work!!

Just found out about it today.
I rang the Virgin operator to ask how I find out the call charges to a number for Create & Craft  (08431 680 000) and was advised that as the companies set theme tarriffs themselves, she couldn't say but she suggested this site to me.

Rubbish. Virgin Media bill you and hence it sets the amount you are charged. It was good that she promoted this website though. ;D

This says that calls to 0843168 numbers are in band PG6 which cost 9.19 pence per minute, plus 10 pence setup fee at all times.

It is so long since I started using No to 0870 I cannot remember - probably a Computer Magazine. I am needing to send 5 messages so I can make contact with one of the experts. No To is brilliant.

A few months ago I was talking to an > Orange advisor < regarding my mobile phone tariff, and HE told me about this website.
Naturally, I now tell as many people as I can......from neighbours to my GP !
As I am disabled, and at home 90% of the time, I rely on the Internet, and phone to organise everything.
Orange gave me an incredible deal - Unlimited Land Line calls..{I hinted I may not renew my contract}
So now when I need to phone companies I always come here to find alternative numbers for those 0845's etc
and I have ALWAYS managed to find either a free phone number, or a land line number..
hence - I am not paying for many calls now.

Hi Sherbert the Supreme Member,

I have a BlackBerry, and the name of my tariff with Orange is :  Racoon 30 Websave.  I pay a straight £36 monthly....which includes all of my Internet usage.  
However, Orange have applied the Unlimited Free Land Line calls as a gesture of goodwill.  I had cause to make a few complaints, and I was lucky enough to have found a very friendly Orange advisor who offered this to me, and I am entitled to this For Life.  

A few times I have looked at prices of other tariffs, other providers, and I haven't seen any that offer unlimited land line calls,
so for once in my life I actually managed to get a good deal.

There is no 60 minute max call, I sit on the phone for 2 hours sometimes!
I love my BlackBerry and being able to email when I'm out and about !

Making constructive complaints is a bit of a part time hobby for me..... but hey, in this world you have to get what you can   ;)

I was fortunate enough to be given the website adress by a customer care assistant in a mobile phone shop ..and yes I have found the site to be very beneficial, like I said before when inclusive call packages came in it,s interesting how soon after the 0845, 0870 etc...came along for company/services financial gain....your site is a great help for the customer .

Heard about you a few years via ago many mediums.  Used today via Which help line.  Excellent site.  Will take full advantage from now on. :)

Please do post about any updates that you find are necessary in the alternative number listings. They are user driven, and so it is important to notify us of numbers that don't work (say why, e.g. not recognised, ring unanswered), are unverified and do work (and can therefore be verified) or where a 08 number has changed or you know of a 08 number which isn't listed for an existing entry. And if you have an additions, those posted through the forum will get added to the database.

Post these things in the Geographical Requests section of the forum. If you can find an existing thread for the company in question, then continue on there else start a new thread. I usually respond to messages on the above subject promptly.

Like so many others I learned of the site from the Martin Lewis Money Saving Expert site a few months ago. However after my bad recent experiences with the Co-operative, which uses no geographic numbers across any of their services, I am spreading the word in person to anyone who is interested.

money saving expert site I think I first heard of it although its now quite famous and mentioned on other sites also.

After I realised I was spending shed loads of money on my phone bill for 0845 numbers.  I think it was a TV programme that mentioned saynoto0870, so of course this is now my favourite webiste!!

As for so many others it was Money Saving Expert that drew me here - I too pass on the web link to all friends and family  :)
