In the previous post the Aldershot number is for the petrol station (they almost always end with a 445 in the number) and the other one is the pharmacy, as pointed out.

It does seem that most Tescos stores end 00. Where there are several branches in one area code the numbers are often similar. EG in Dundee, 430300, 430400 and 430500. So if the branch you want isn't listed, but there are ones in the same area code, try the pattern of 100 (as above).

There must be a reason that they have gone to the expense of changing numbers like this. It seems that petrol stations often end 045. Thomson Local seems quite good. They list petrol stations with normal geographical numbers. If my theory is correct, the store number should be the same but ending 00.

UK2U.net is worth bookmarking as it seems to list quite a few geographical numbers for Tescos branches. If the store you wish to contact is not listed on this site, phone a neighbouring store, they should be able to help.

That number doesn't look like a Tesco. Tesco branches' NGNs usually start 0845 677

Being express it will be a local shop, and Tesco are taking alot of these. Has it changed hands, who used to have it? Maybe the number is the same as under the previous company?

Tescos seem to have direct dialing with the switchboard/general number ending 00.

I emailed Tesco asking for their  geo number for my local store.  They firstly gave me the standard "..only 0845... can be used."
However, after requesting that someone with more authority answered my query, I got a reply which apologised for the confusion, and said " If you are unable to reach the store on 0845... try  0138..."

Try phoning the idiots who man the 0800 505 555 helpline - they insist that 0845 is a local call rate and that "it has been agreed with BT" that customers will not be charged more than a local call.

Please could someone tell me if this is accurate?  I thought 0845s were NTS and as such had a geographical no?  If this is so, I will ring the writer of the email and point this out.   If not any suggestions as to a reply (better be fairly polite I suppose, reluctantly).  I hate Tesco anyway but this sort of thing just reinforces it.   I don't shop there as it always resulted in a complaint but at the moment my daughter has little choice and it is costing her a lot to deal with mouldy food and errors on her internet shop.

I was told something similar a few months ago by the Yorkshire Building Society about their branch 'phone numbers.

I do not know the technical details - and perhaps someone else could confirm / clarify - but my understanding is that their internal telecoms can now be carried on their inter-branch computer network without separate external telephone lines to each branch.  I assume that the 0845 numbers go to a central point and are then routed internally according to the last part of the 0845 number.  Whether there must still be a geographic number for the 'central point', I don't know, but I suspect that the individual branches / stores do not now need individual 'real' telephone numbers.

Now if the 0845 number were truly a 'local call rate' and treated the same as geographic calls, this would not matter ...

As I get to it, I'll try to post by county.

Am a little puzzled as some of the stores being listed by county have 0845 numbers.  Am also still unclear as to whether an 0845 is an NTS which does have a geog no or whether the Tesco woman is right and they don't.   I really want to have a go if they are wrong so absolute confirmation of the status of 0845 would really help.  Thank you.

Yes some of the list have 0845. But this is the info as I find it from one source. However it does prove that their network has not been centralised yet, so therefore an ordinary number will exist for the store.
Perhaps you could chat to one of the help desk assistants in the store, perhaps just ask them to ring your phone once as a missed call, just to check your phone is working. After all, it will cost them nothing, then with any luck the geo number will come up on screen.
A common theme amongst these numbers, as has been previously pointed out is that the actual store number probably ends in 400. So the helpdesk might give **** *** *421. If that's the case, then you've got it.

We'll have to wait and see. However, Tesco appear to have adopted DDI in many of their stores where the number ending 00 is the main number and 45 is the petrol station. So they have at least 50 DDI numbers per store, so whether they would bin them all, bearing in mind the expense they must have gone to to implement them all in the first place, we'll have to wait and see.

They might provide the 0845 so that it can be forwarded to the call centre during 'busy' periods. In which case they might be trying to dissuade customers from calling the geographicals.
