Title: Dell Danger?
Post by markoos on Mar 1st, 2005 at 4:43pm
Just a note to make anyone aware, I called the alternative UK  direct number for Dell - 01344 373196 (instead of 0870 9080500 - Business Support) because I wanted to order some printer ink over the 'phone.

Due to the amount of different hold-messages and different hold-music I knew I was being transferred... turns out my call was connected to India, and possibly at a Premium Rate, as I was told by the person who took my call. Needless to say I hung up, and we're getting rid of the Dell printer (£48 for replacement col/b&w cartridges and an international call?!)

Be Aware.... it looks like Dell are squeezing every last penny out of its customers.

No, you dialed a normal geographical number, therefore you will be charged the rate for that number!  ::)

They told you this because you would normally have gone via 0870/090, so the alternative works!

I agree the cartridges are expensive (which aren't?) but, if you dialled the 01344 number on call1886.co.uk that call (to wherever they chose to route it) would have cost you a grand total of 1p.

I'm currently looking for a laptop, and have just had a very heated argument with a Dell Salesperson over 0870's being freephone! ::)   She insisted that 0870 was a freephone number and there was no possibility that I would be charged at all to phone it.  Every salesperson at Dell has a direct number and, yes, you guessed it, every number is an 0870 (freephone ::)).

The absolute b******* that this company put out to its customers is disgraceful and I will not be buying my laptop from them as a result of their underhandedness>:(

That's not to mention their current 'offer' of a 'free printer worth £76' which strangely coincides with a sudden price increase of £76 on the laptop.  Strange, huh? >:(

And it's probably the printer which, thanks to this site, I paid £9.87 (delivered) for back in March.

It's a re-badged Lexmark BTW.

Do lexmark ink cartridges fit in Dell printers then?

Buy your cartridges at a fraction of the normal price at:

http://www.ijtdirect.com/

That's what I've heard.  Seeing as they are actually Lexmark printers they cartridges should fit.

It's a bit like the way Daewoo changed their name to Chevrolet - same cars, same parts, just a different name. ;D

Rather than 'at a fraction of', the words 'at a discount off' might be better used there.

That depends on whether I was using the world "fraction" as in (1) "the quotient of two rational numbers" - namely an amount lower than the "normal price"; or as in (2) "a very much reduced amount" - namely an amount very lower than the "normal price".  ;D

Welcome to pedant's corner...

Here we go again... ::)

I was the only pedant in this forum, standing in the corner which was only ever designed for one pedant.

Hence pedant's corner.

However, as you have now joined me Tanllan, it has been renamed pedants' corner.

Happy? ;)

Thank you, PeDaSap.

Happy?

You could also try http://www.northdevoncomputers.com/shop/ . They have some good offers in re-manufactured and compatible cartridges from time to time which really are a fraction of the manufacturers' prices. For example I purchased a stock of Epsom colour and B&W cartidges for my 2 Epsom printers for only £1 each.

Now that is cheap - I think!

Of course I forgot to mention that pedant's corner had to be extended to accommodate more then one pedant before it could be officially renamed pedants' corner.

However, I can now announce that the building work has finished and it's ready for fully occupation.   ;D

So exactly how many occupants are there now PeDaSp?

Presently there are two members of pedants' corner: myself and Tanllan.

Any member wishing to apply for membership will have to complete a form in triplicate and send it to the membership committee (composed of myself and Tanllan).

The applicant will also be required to submit a 200 word essay entitled:

"Is the phrase: 'pedantic detail' a tautology? Discuss."

After extensive perusal of the applicant's previous forum posts, and a study of the applicant's essay, the membership committee will take a vote.

Only applicants who have demonstrated an obsessive, unreasonable and demonstrable addiction to the art of pedantry will be allowed to join.

Obsession and unreason not, of course, being part of the science of pedantry. Time to go hunting the Snark, methinks.
