How can we help if you haven't given basic information? ::)
The 0870 number(s), a web link to the information on the system... **** out the last few digits if it's a direct number for an individual room. |
Title: Re: keele university halls ? Post by jrawle on Mar 10th, 2005 at 4:46pm
It's a longshot, but try 01782 48 xxxx
Otherwise, please can you give us some more information, such as the 0870 number concerned, who operates it, etc. |

The 0870 number belongs to Torch communications, who also have to geographical number I suggested you try.
Unfortunately, it seems that the phone service is provided by Keycom, who operate voice over IP (VoIP) systems. That means there probably isn't a geographical number, as the 0870 number just routes the calls over the internet. http://www.techland.co.uk/index/quintum_voip_case_keycom If there is an in-room internet connection, I suggest using a service such as Skype to make calls for free. |

There is a new entry in the unverified database for Keele University halls and it is 01782 24 followed by the last four digits of the internal extension number.
Can anyone confirm that this is correct? |

I posted it. It works. I use it all the time to call across campus, I'm a student there.
Hope it helps someone Minardi |

Hi,
I heard that, recently, there were some rainstorms that disconnected the telephone lines, and when the repairmen came down, they realised that there was still a 01782 connection in there, and removed it. I have tried phoning the 01782 24xxxx number, but it, unfortunately, doesn't work. Does anyone know of any other number we could use? Thanks very much |

Right, Update for you all. I've been keeping an eye on this. Currently the number DEFINETLY works into:
HAWTHORNS HALL LINDSAY HALL HOLLY CROSS I have NOT tested it with THE OAKES BARNES Mainly due to the fact I know no one in those halls, But, I don't see why it shouldn't. They began working again monday this week, and Ive kept an eye on them, they have been working all week since. HTH Minardi |
Title: Re: keele university halls ? Post by Minardi on Aug 9th, 2007 at 5:53pm
Currently not working into any halls at all. KeyCom have cut off all the Non Geo numbers. Good job I'm living out next year.
As an aside, I'm amazed these cowboys make money, as i was one of very few people to even bother registering the phone for use! Hopefully they will go bust. |

Can you confirm what number you dialled. Also, reply #3 gives 0870 14684xx and you give 0870 14884xx. :-? How does your internal extension number relate to this (i.e. what is your internal extension number)? |
Title: Re: keele university halls ? Post by Dale on Sep 25th, 2007 at 12:05pm
Hello again, internal extension is 7949 and doesn't really appear to be related to the 0870 number...
That is definately the number though as I have rang through to check. Any other details which may help you? Tried both 01782 248429 and 01782 247949 |
Title: Re: keele university halls ? Post by Dave on Sep 25th, 2007 at 1:58pm
Usually we find that the 01/02 number relates to the extension number rather than the 0870 one. One possibility is that they have changed the 01782 numbers because they have been discovered.
Try changing the third digit of the local number. i.e. 01782 240949, 01782 241949, 01782 242949 through to 01782 249949. Report back what you find. Do any ring and can you ascertain whether they are university accommodation numbers, residential or other offices? Failing that, these numbers (01782 24) are allocated to NTL. There are other 01782 NTL prefixes, of which two were registered in September 2006. This may be before the numbers were changed, hence they may be worth a try. |
Title: Re: keele university halls ? Post by Dale on Sep 25th, 2007 at 2:51pm
All of these are coming through as you have dialled an incorrect number from my phone, I'm willing to give the other prefixes a try though, fingers crossed eh?
If you'd like to disclose these, I will try and get it sorted. Thank you for all your help so far, and fingers crossed it'll be done! Dale |
Title: Re: keele university halls ? Post by Dave on Sep 25th, 2007 at 5:00pm
Prefixes beginning 01782 allocated to NTL are as follows:
01782 23 03/1996 01782 24 03/1996 01782 25 03/1996 01782 35 11/1995 01782 462 09/2006 01782 465 09/2006 01782 76 04/1997 01782 85 01/1995 01782 86 01/1995 01782 87 04/1997 01782 881 10/2005 01782 882 10/2005 01782 883 10/2005 01782 884 10/2005 01782 885 10/2005 01782 886 10/2005 01782 887 10/2005 Dates shown are "change dates" and are likely to indicate when the prefix came into service. Some of the later prefixes have three local digits (ie they are blocks of 1,000 instead of 10,000). In these cases you will need to put the last three digits onto the end of these. I suggest you try those prefixes allocated in 2006 and 2005 first. Let's assume that those from 1995/6 have been used. |

No luck, is it possible for a geographic number simply not to exist? Consequently no way of getting to the phone without using the evil 0870?

Title: Re: keele university halls ? Post by Minardi on Sep 27th, 2007 at 7:18am
The 01782 24 shortcut was widely known for years... they KeyCom found out we knew and cut it all off. There is currently no known way around this, other than using a mobile/phone box (and I know how bad certain networks are at keele.)
Good Luck Mate. I'm living out this year... so I have a lovely landline number all of my own. Much better. |

Dale, I notice you've visited since you posted last. Have you tried the suggestion I put in a private message to you?

Title: Re: keele university halls ? Post by Dale on Sep 30th, 2007 at 7:38pm
I was going to, but for some reason, although the dialling out isn't working the old 01782 24 seems to be, I don't know if this is temporary but it is working.

This is a very important point. Are you saying you can call your room's phone using 01782 24+whatever? |
Title: Re: keele university halls ? Post by Dale on Oct 1st, 2007 at 7:48am
Yep dialling 01782 24 **** where **** is your extension number was working last night although the phones are not working for dialling out.

Which begs the question, why would they change it and then change it back? I think it's more likely that they somehow blocked it and now unblocked it. |

I'd agree with that! Although its still not working for dialling out, although that is insignificant really, only really want calls coming in on it for now :-? Could in theory become blocked once more. |
Title: Re: keele university halls ? Post by Minardi on Oct 14th, 2007 at 3:40pm
I can confirm this is now working again (Tested into LINDSAY halls).
AFAIK, BT reconnected it. From what I hear on the grapevine, BT (or whoever provides the incomming systems) beleive the numbers should be reachable from 01782, KeyCom don't, so cut the cables as they come into the Uni's phone system. BT (or whoever) politely reconnect them every now and again. Would that make sense, or have I been fed crap? |

Was down for a while earlier this week, but fully working into HAWTHORNS. ;)

Keele has dumped KeyCom and the 08 number :D :D
More details here: http://students.keele.ac.uk/telephones.htm The dialing out rates are also far more reasonable than they ever were too now, with landline calls for under 1p a minute. Which unlike KeyCom is actually cheap! Fantastic. Minardi |

That's excellent news! Very reasonable outgoing call rates and incoming geographical numbers. |
