Title: Birmingham University accommodation- 0870 709 ****
Post by carl.dougie on Apr 4th, 2005 at 5:22pm
Having read the Swansea University thread I thought I'd ask if anyone could help with my own university accommodation telephone number.

As far as I can tell, all rooms have the '0870 709' prefix which I'm informed is on a Telewest line, provided by a company called Damovo Connect. So, not only the insult of an 0870 number but also a Telewest line which prevents most dial-up ISPs from working. That is because the room I am in has no internet access either.

I've trawled through some of Google to no avail so I wonder if anyone else has any other ideas?

Thanks,

Carl

I was in your situation a few months ago (except Swansea provides free super-uber-fast wireless access throughout the campus including halls 8) whereas you don't have any net access)

Anyway, enough gloating (sorry) ;D, I suggest you find the list of 0121 numbers allotted by Ofcom on their website.  If you find a prefix allotted to one of the providers of your uni line, then you may need to do some mass tactical dialling and [possibly] annoy some Brummies :D!!

The number in the unverified listings is 0121 257xxxx. This has been posted a few times, so I presume it's correct. If it is, please let us know!  ;)

Thanks Dave, I hadn't realised there was an unverified section nor had I realised where to access it until now!

I'll be able to properly test it on Friday when I return to my accommodation. I'll keep you posted.

Carl

Title: Damovo Student Connect - Uni of Birmingham
Post by random on Nov 10th, 2007 at 3:36pm
Hello all!

I just had a quick query - I went through the list of alternative numbers (to 0870 709xxxx) and found an 0121 number for Damovo Connect at The University of Birmingham. However, I was wondering whether it will be possible to find an 0800 number for it please?, because I can only ring 0800 numbers for free and I want to phone a relative at university. Any help and tips would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks and kindest regards

Why would there be a incoming freephone numbers for rooms in the accommodation and if they aren't in the public domain, who would be using them??? Who would be paying for call received on them?? You can't magic up something which doesn't exist!  ::)  ::)

Random,

You cannot get everything for free! I would be grateful that you have got a geographic number as an alternative, and don't have to call the NGN. If your geographic calls aren't free, my suggestion would be to move to a provider that provides free geographic calls (most do now!)

If you are calling from a BT line, go via 18185 and the call will only cost 5p for however long you chat for, 5p per call isn't much.
