Title: Calling UK From Abroad Post by Benuk73 on May 5th, 2005 at 3:58pm
First Post! ;D
I've noticed on some websites that they now state if calling from Abroad to dil +8870 xxxxxxxxxxx. So does that mean now we wont be able to find out the area number? They used to say "if calling from outside uk call +44208xxxxxxxxx which revealed to us their location. Just wondered. Ben |

By putting +44 in front of there NGN number eg
(Dialing from abroad call +44(0)870123----.) they dont want you to have there UK geographic no because they want make any money from you.Mind you this doesnt work from every country!!! so they or the caller could be losing out.The same applies to 0845, and 0871 numbers. Did you have a particular site in mind. |

Thanks for your reply. No particular website. I just understood you couldnt dial an 0870 number from overseas but i gather there is now a way around it, and they have worked it out by not having to call their uk 01 or 02 number.

As I was curious I asked a friend in the US to dial my GP's 0870 number and, unfortunately, it did work! However, there is no guarantee that it will work from everywhere.
Perhaps someone can provide a more technical explanation of what this depends on? |

It depends upon what each outgoing country operator wishes to try. Since they do not get paid for failed calls to unobtainable numbers some have found it easier to bar (at their end, rather than wait for a failed return signal) bar anything that is not 01, 02 or even 07.
Of course, now that they can offer differential charging to 07X it depends upon their interconnect arrangements. But there is no central arbiter. I hope that this will help. And, of course, it is down to regulation not technical restriction or limitation... |
