Title: Liverpool University Student Accommodation Post by Krawlor on May 17th, 2005 at 7:00am
Hi!
First I would like to apoligize if this is the wrong forum for this thread, but was not sure where to put it. I have tried to search around for info, but i'm not really sure what I am looking for ? The thing is I wen't to england on a holiday and met this girl who I wan't to call alot :) So anyway, I thought of using skype since I had used it to call my mate in england and it was very cheap, but when I did call her it chewed up my credits much faster than when I called him. So I looked around and found out she has a 0870 number as she lives in student accomodations in Liverpool. Now I am from denmark so I don't know much about english phone numbers and how everything works there, so that's why I thought of making this thread. Can anyone tell me if there is a cheaper alternative for her to get so I can call her at the lower rates with skype ? Would it be expensive for her and is there much trouble with doing it ? I really appreciate any help I can get so in advance thank you very much! Cheers! |

There are two entries in the database for Liverpool Uni. The first is in the verified list and is 0870 7552*** -> 0151 7958***
The second is unverified and is 0870 888xxxx -> 0151 794xxxx |

It didn't work and after talking to her again (using the expensive number) I found out she is on KeyCom and not the liverpool uni.
I haven't had any luck finding a Geo number for that company so I was wondering if you knew any ? Thanks! |

KeyCom rings a bell. It's been talked about on here with regards university accommodation.
A search of this forum for keycom brings up a few hits. Unfortunately it appears KeyCom specialise in VoIP phone services (see here), which means that there probably isn't a geographical alternative. :-/ How much does it cost your friend to call you from her room phone to Denmark? |
Title: Re: Liverpool University Student Accommodation Post by Krawlor on May 17th, 2005 at 7:29pm
darn, that's just typical...!
I don't know how much it would cost her really, I can ask her to check, do you think it would be cheaper than the 0.155£ that i'm paying ? |

I don't know. I think the info on this is at ]www.keytalk.net. The only other suggestion I can think of is that you arrange to phone her on a public payphone (which have normal geographical numbers). |

Alright, i'll look around and see what the cost is, thanks again mate :D calling her on a payphone would kinda suck though lol

I've just checked and it's extortion to call internationally from a BT Payphone. To Denmark it is £1 per minute with a 10p (£0.10) connection fee and a minimum charge of 30p. :o
So the first 30p will buy 12seconds. |

BT? what does that mean ?
So basically what your saying is that it will cost her a fortune to call me from her home phone ? I pay £0.155 pr. minutte. A friend of mine said that she could use one of those cheaper companies, something about dialing a number before dialing mine and she would get it for 1p pr. min. is that possible when she has keycom ? |

That's British Telecom which provides payphones in the street. BT was the public utility which ran the phones here in the UK and is now privatised. Quote:
No, I don't know what it will cost her. Get her to check. Quote:
I can't say for definate, but I maybe that's from a normal landline, probably a BT one. The phones in the rooms in the halls are provided by KeyCom, so she would have to find out what rates they charge. The thing is that some of these services you mention use 0844 numbers (and other 08 non-geographical numbers). The problem with these numbers is that only BT must provide access to them at a particular rate from a normal landline, and the rate quoted is usually the BT one. It is often [more] expensive to call such numbers from other providers, although it's best to check. I imagine that KeyCom would be quite happy to charge an arm and a leg to call these numbers as they effectively have a monopoly in the university. That is the reason they can get away with rip-off 0870 in the first place. |

Hmm thank you very much for your feedback.
Looks like I just have to pay that ripoff price then if I wan't to speak with her, which I do of course :) I will be checking around though if there are cheaper alternatives though. It would be much easier if she had a computer and net, but she doesn't and it seems that no matter how cheap I can do it here it all ends up at her end coz of that damn 0870 number >:( Just had a thought though, is it possible for her to change to a different provider so she would get a normal number or is it a fixed deal at student accomodations ? Thanks again, might try the payphone thingie lol :) nah.... |

According to the dognbonezone site they run the Liverpool University Student Phone system.Unless there are two places in Liverpool of University status,or there are 2 seperate suppliers.

*sigh* :( I just got a reply from Keycom, it would cost her 9p to call me pr. minutte so it's still cheaper for me to call her........god this sucks!

But you said it cost you (the equivalent of) 15.5p/min! Are you confused with £s and pence? 9p is 9pence, that's £0.09. |
Title: Re: Liverpool University Student Accommodation Post by Krawlor on May 18th, 2005 at 2:40pm
Oh really ? hmm interesting :) then it is a bit cheaper for her to call me, not alot though....and since she is a student I don't wan't her to spend alot of money on calling me.....thanks for your help :)

Btw, just to make sure, if she did go to a BT payphone and gave me the number, are you sure it would be charged as the cheaper rate ?

Title: Re: Liverpool University Student Accommodation Post by Dave on May 18th, 2005 at 2:55pm wrote on May 18th, 2005 at 2:48pm:
Yes it would be cheaper, providing it was a geographical number (In this case, from Payphone, it would begin 0151) and providing your telephone provider charges less to UK geographical numbers. |
Title: Re: Liverpool University Student Accommodation Post by Krawlor on May 18th, 2005 at 2:57pm
ahhhh ok, so as long as the number is 0151 i'm good then :)
Cheers for that! Any other numbers I should watch out for ? or is 0151 the only one ? |

What rate does your telephone provider charge for UK geographical numbers?
wrote on May 18th, 2005 at 2:57pm:
UK numbering information is in this post. All geographicals start 01 or 02 and mobiles start 077, 078 and 079. All the rest I would avoid. |
Title: Re: Liverpool University Student Accommodation Post by Krawlor on May 18th, 2005 at 4:43pm
I use SkypeOut (headset/computer/internet) to call a normal landline, and a normal GEO number would cost me £0.014 pr. min. and that's including VAT. So basically dirt cheap :) that's why I was very upset when I saw it eating my credits alot faster than when I called my mates number which is a 0151 number.
My friend was trying to register a liverpool number for me so in that way I could get it cheaper calling her, not sure how that would work but ended up not being able to, but made me think though, would there be some way of doing it like that ? I doesn't seem like I can get it any cheaper calling her at home, so either the payphone or some way for her to call me cheaper......if there is any....I found this but not sure if it's what i'm looking for ? http://www.voipuser.org/article_10.html Cheers once again! I know it's far out by now but if it could be cheaper means that more minuttes talking to her :D |
