Title: Society of Motor Manufacturers & Traders (SMMT)
Post by johnilsley on Jun 1st, 2005 at 3:41pm
Society of Motor Manufacturers & Traders conciliation service. Normal number is 0207 2357000 but they refuse to put you through unless via the 0870 no. above. Can anyone provide an 0207 number?

Edit by Dave: Changed title of thread.

The chances are you are ringing main reception for them.

Having a look at their website I noticed they use geographical numbers in the range 0207 235 7xxx.  The fax number 0207 235 7112.

Therefore, try ringing another number in that type of range (eg 0207 235 7110) and when they answer just ask them is this the consumer advice line?  They may say "yes" in which case you're lucky but likely they'll say "no" in which case just say to them sorry could you transfer us please as it was your reception/switchboard that transferred me in the first place to this wrong department.

If they don't transfer you (or lie and say they can't) then try another number nearby.

Another way I found that sometimes works and that is phone a nearby number like 0207 235 7110 and when they answer ask them if its the Consumer Advice Line when they reply "no" then ask them "sorry about that.  Do you have their extension number?"  The extension number will likely be 4 digits so just dial 0207 235 xxxx (xxxx being the extension number).

Let us know how you get on!

What else do you need to go on please? They are the organisation representing motor manufacturers in the UK and are based in Halkin St. central London. Thanks.

BBB has answered your query to the best of his ability in the previous posting to yours.

When making the OP it helps us if you can give us as much info as possible.EG Full name. Website.Address. Postcode.Geo Fax No.So we can assist people.Unfortunately you missed the word Motor out of the title.

Fortunately we were able to work out who you were after, and if you follow BBB,s posting  hopefully you will find the Geo No you are after.

Let us know how you get on

Corrected title.

I've had a look at the website, which is ]www.smmt.co.uk in the Internet Archive and it throws up nothing. It seems that before this 0870 was put in place for consumer advice, they directed you to the switchboard number and address/fax.
