the geographical alternative listed for this company now just gives a recorded message asking one to ring three 0870 numbers, one of which is I think the one for which the alternative is on file!  The numbers are 0870 770 0231/2/3.

0208 4816875 (Customer services) During the day gives a message about the Brochure line and then the various options for 0870 770 0231/2/3.  After hours gives a reply saying Sorry the office is closed. Usual hours of operation are 9am-5pm, Mon-Thu  . . . . . etc. . . . .  Please call again during working hours.
Why they dont keep the same message is really beyond me - seems daft  !!   :-/

0208 5414440 (Switchboard) after hours gives the website details & the Fax number, then allows you to leave a message.
During the day it works just fine and they will pass you through to Customer services.

We'll have to have a look around for any other working numbers, which will mean trying some of the surrounding numbers to see if they work. It's a long job and we may be unsuccessful.

If you fancy having a go at it please let us know how you get on.   ::)

Thanks for that Dave - if I have luck I'll certainly let you know.  Incidentally, in listing London numbers the space should come after the 020, NOT after the following digit.  London is all one area - 020.  The 3, 7, or 8 that follows is the first digit of the local number, not the last of an area code.  The last change was so badly publicised that many people still get it wrong, and it's a long slow job to spread the word.  It is confusing for those of us who live in London when it's given to us wrongly, as it's all too easy to mistranscribe either missingthe fourth digit or repeating it ...

Does that mean that my STD code is now an incredible 7 digits long (0176723) then?

The last digit there is unique to my village and surrounding villages have different digits (surrounding towns have different penultimate digits).

How come the USA, with 4 or 5 times our population can still have 3 digit Area Codes and 7 digit numbers then?

Very simple. The US regulator is not Ofcom.

The US, and indeed the entire north American region has a sensible numbering plan (the NANP).

No your area code is whatever it was before.  They seem to vary across the country.  London has a 3-digit one, other places have 4 or 5 or whatever.  You just have to know what itis.  The waty to tell is - what do I have to dial to call someone in the same area?  The preceding digits, that you don't have to dial, constitute the area code.  The one you DO have to dial form the local number.  To dial the house next door, I have to put the * (or 7 or 3) as the first digit.  i don't have top put the 020.  So 020 is the area code, the 8 is part of the local number.  It may be illogical to someone looking from the outside over the whole system, but for the individual user it just doesn't matter.  Either the called number is in your local area, in swhich case you just dial the local biut, or it isn't in which case you dial the whole caboodle, and if the split is different in another part of the country, who knows?  and indeed, who cares?  To qauote John Lennon, not me for a kickoff!

It only supports a recorded announcement forwarding you to the non-geographic number.

That is their switchboard number and is already listed in the database.  I'm not sure if they'll transfer you from switchboard but not likely because they've purposely gone out their way to stop the current geographical alternative but you can only try.

Unfortunately the page that I answered the request to actually started with the very brief message (today) from Zanc. Perhaps the page did not load properly, but the request was answered in good faith, not briefly scanned and ignored (which I have been guilty of before) before giving my few pence worth.
