Title: Memory prefixes
Post by goldfish on Sep 14th, 2005 at 10:19pm
???
Does anyone know why, when I dial my memory prefix number for this site, and then a separate memory number followed by the hash, that I get a message telling me that that 2nd memory has not been recognised?
When I redial using the full telephone number, it works!
I've not previously had trouble doing this but it seems that when the hash was added to the instructions recently, I've been getting quite a few of these messages.
Any solutions/suggestions?

If indeed we had the faintest idea what you were talking about, we would be half way to trying to help you.

Do you think that you could start again and explain what it is you are trying to do first, and we'll see how it goes from there.    ::)

Yes, reading my thread back, I suppose it's a bit muddy!

1. I don't dial 1899 before my call, I have to dial
08081 708 708 first (because I'm on ntl).

2. Because this is a bit long-winded, I had pre-programmed this number into the memory on my phone.
So, I press memory 8 before I make a call.

3.  This used to work fine, when I then pressed another memory-stored number on my phone, eg memory 1.   (Therefore at this stage I have pressed
memory 8 and memory 1).

4.  The sequence seems to have recently changed, as the instructions now are that I have to finally press the hash symbol on the phone to be connected.

5.  My phone doesn't like this as a voice then says that the number I've rung (memory 1), has not been recognised.  (Yes, I have checked my memory 1 etc and found it to be correct).

6. When I redial using the full telephone number for the memory 1 number, I can get through ok.  This is the same for all my other memory-stored numbers.
This is a real pain!

I hope this explains my problem better.

I know what you mean.  This was discussed on the MSE Forum here (post 335 onwards).

First of all check that your phone is setup for Tone Dialling (sometimes marked 'T') and not Pulse dialling.  This isn't available on all phones so don't worry.

How many '#' have you got at the end of the 1899 freephone access number (memory 8 )?  From what I read about 4 or 5 are needed.

As you say, it appears that cable users now need to dial a '#' at the end of the number.

Below are some options I would try:-
  • Have you tried programming a '#' at the end of the number you want to dial (eg 01234 567890#) into memory location 1?

  • Press the '#' key after you have pressed your memory button 1, etc but preferably during the pause (after it has dialled the freephone number and your number) as this seemed to work on the MSE forum by some members?
Nobody seems to know if this is a fault or an annoying new feature of Call1899/18866 when using their freephone access number from a non-BT line.

Thanks for your prompt reply.

Your suggestion about storing the hash in the memory-stored number seems the best option.
But, before I try reprogramming my other memory-stored numbers, I thought that I really ought to check if my phone has touch tone as opposed to pulse tone.

Duh, how do I do this?

Listen!

Pulse dialling sounds like a series of clicks. Tone dialling sounds like a series of (semi-musical) tones.
