We are receiving "silent calls" on an almost daily basis.  They are from 08700-426655.  If I call the number there is also silence but I'm wondering if there is some scam which might end up costing me lots of money.  Anyone any ideas?

Why have you called it back? You know 0870 numbers can generate revenue for the person you're calling. ::)

No, you will be charged 0870 rates as you dialled an 0870 number.  ::)

Putting the number into Google gives some clues. Search for it with and without spaces (eg 08700426655, 0870 0426655 etc), you'll get a few hits. Grumbletext also has some complaints about this number.

Dave; you ask why I called the number.  Pure curiosity, they had called 7 times and I would have liked to know the reason.  Maybe they can make enough £0.10 s to make it worth their while but more like a get rich slow system.

But it's because of people ringing these sorts of 'scam' numbers that they exist in the first place!

So if I receive a call from such a number, I have those who do ring them to thank for being plagued by this rubbish.

It's got to be a slow way to make money with 0870. I noticed that the number is quite a memorable one with two double digits at the end. I thought, maybe it belongs to a company doing 'marketing' calls.

Sure enough, one of those links Google gives shows that it is from a mobile phone dealer dialing Orange prefixed numbers. See here.

The above number often calls my mobile and as I never answer calls from suspect numbers I don't know who they are. Any ideas?

I keep getting 0870 0426655 on my Orange mobile. Searched on Google and got conflicting opinions on it, some said it was a scam, some said not. Does anyone here know better.

Not sure about knowing better, but it appears to be a scam and is already in other sections. Have a look/search under  0870 0426655.

And don't dial it unless you can persuade them to accept a transfer charge call  :)

So far have ignored the call from this number as I thought it to be dodgy, but they keep trying. After seach on Google most seemed to think it a scam, but one said it was from an accredited Orange dealer, but I don't trust it. Have now registered my number with the TPS - will that stop it happening?

It appears to be a company called Docklands Telecom, see this thread on MSE. A Google of Docklands Telecom gives this page as the first result which dates back to May 2004 and shows how long these people have been creating a telephone nuisance.

A search of docklands telecom nationwide brings up several results including:
Docklands Telecom Centre Ltd
Unit 9 Ashton Gate
Ashton Road
Romford
Essex
RM3 8UF

For the above address, one entry gives 0870 0424433, which is very similar to the number that the cold calls have been coming from. The address is north-east of Romford and a further search reveals 01708 383202.

The above address also has the number 020 75382626 by its 192.com listing, which is on Poplar exchange, but doesn't accept incoming calls. This is in central London on the Docklands (see here for map).

From the results on 192.com, I guess Docklands Telecom's Docklands address must be:
1A BURDETT ROAD
LONDON
E3 4TU

I´ve been targeted by these plonkers too. A search on the companies house register gives them at the romford address

If it is of help to anyone else, my method of dealing with these people is two-fold:

1) If I answer the phone, and realise it is a marketing call, I get them into conversation, without ever answering any of their questions. Ask them what they had for lunch, what they are wearing, what they do in their spare time (or you can go off any tangent about their sx life hehehehehehe). Wastes their time and they get really hacked off.

2) On nokia phones you can have different ring tones for different caller groups. Dedicate a caller group to junk calls, set up a "silent" ring tone for that group, add their number to that group. result is you might still get calls, but you never hear them, and you know to ignore them when you see their number in your missed calls list. You are not totally in control, but mighty close.

I've been getting alot of cold calls lately from this 0870 number but when I call back it sounds like an automated american voice. But it wasn't docklands telecom, rang them up on a 0844 number. So, I'm confused. The name of the american-sounding company was Cell-Cal or something. Nothing on Google about them, grrrrr
