Title: St. Marys University Twickenham
Post by Lui on Oct 24th, 2005 at 8:22pm
I hav my sister which is in this university, she has an 0870 number and we are overseas so its difficult to get in contact with her. They use a company called keycom, ive contacted them to see if they can disclose a geographical number, but they seem a bit aprehensive and dont want to give it. I dont kno if they dont have an equivelant geographical number or they just dont want to disclose it.
I also found out that st marys contact numbers all start with 020 8240**** where the last four digits are extension numbers. My sister has an internal extension number for her room at the halls of residence but ive tried placing it at the endo of this number but it doesnt work. Can any one give me a lead to this mini investigation ??? thanks

What is the 0870 number? *** out the last few digits. Is this 0870 a number direct to your sister's phone or do you dial the 0870 which then gives you recording asking you to enter the extension number?

The prefix 0870 239 is operated by Torch Communications, since 10/2004. Previous to that it was allocated to Energis.

Being in London, there are many possible numbers. This won't stop us trying to find the number!

Within the London area code (020), the following prefixes are allocated to Torch Communications:
  • 020 7788 Date: 05/1999
  • 020 8181 Date: 06/2001
  • 020 1174 Date: 03/2002
  • 020 7160 Date: 07/2003
  • 020 1173 Date: 02/2005 ~
  • 020 1222 Date: 02/2005 ~
  • 020 8185 Date: 02/2005 ~
  • 020 8712 Date: 02/2005 ~
  • 020 3131 Date: 06/2005 ~
  • 020 3130 Date: 06/2005 ~

Those prefixes marked ~ are new prefixes, and not ones previously allocated to another provider. I assume that the system is not newly installed this year.

If we assume that it's not an 020 7 number (because it used to be inner London), then I suggest you try 020 8181xxxx.

The other possibility is 020 1174xxxx which you may not be able to dial.

Hi Dave do i use these numbers with the last 4 digits of her 0870 number or with her internal extension number ?

Dave i have tried all combinations using firstly the last four digits of the 0870 number and that didnt get me anywhere but then i tried using them with her extension number and the first number actually dialled and aske me to key in the extension number again so i did and then a machine came up with invalid extension number they then put me through to an operator and i asked where i was calling to that she replied you are calling eight different companies !!! Could that be the number linked to keycom which terminates there ???

Nop i asked what companies they were and they had nothing to do with the telecomm companies. It was something to do with digital media or something similar !!   ::)

It may be that it is 020 1174xxxx and that you cannot dial it from abroad. It is the case in this country that most people cannot dial these numbers as they are there to have 0870 numbers diverted to them.

It has been reported on this forum that people with Orange mobile phones or NTL landlines can dial them. Perhaps someone with one of these could try it.

Does your sister have a mobile and is it on Orange?

I've tried this number with several different extensions and it just gave a continuous tone.
