This Ofcom ruling covers amongst other things Talk Radio describing 0870 as National Rate on air.

Tks BJ.
Brilliant. Now will any other miscreants take note of this Ofcom ruling...? But very useful ammunition, thank you. |

Yes, very nice :) "While 0870 telephone numbers are not regulated as premium rate services, they can cost considerably more to call than geographic numbers. Guidance issued by Ofcom and by the Advertising Standards Authority makes it clear that these numbers should not be described as “national rate”." Daniel |

For anyone interested,I was the complainant re the 0870 number and if you now look at Talksports website they now call their 0870 number as costing up to 10p per minute from a BT line, which is wrong as it is up to7.51p per minute.
They have also started stating on air that the text message will cost callers 50p plus network charges, another complaint I made to Ofcom at the same time. |

It's only a part victory!
They mention ASA guidelines but ignored it when I made my complaint to them. I made a complaint to ofcom about the Pizza advert (Domino's I think) that sponsored The Simpsons on Sky1. They used an 0871 number but didn't include the cost of this call. I included all relevant information from the ASA/CAP, etc. A sponsorship advert comes under ofcom remit and not the ASA. Ofcom's reply was that they were currently ok to do this and it was being looked into and a consultation had been done. I believe it was the other consultation that has been done and was released the same time as the NTS: A Way Forward consultation. So it would appear the only thing they objected to was the 'national rate' description and not the fact that a company can remain silent (if they wanted) over these costs. |
