Title: 070 number called and hungup
Post by tobywinn on Nov 1st, 2005 at 3:29pm
Hi

Not sure I am in the right place but on my mobile an 070 number called then hung up so it looked like a missed call - I presume they do this to get you to call back.

I havent called - will I be charged a premium to do so and can I do anything about it - it seems a bit unfair.

The number is 07061735786

Yes this will be a scam!

070 numbers are like 08xx numbers in so much as they need to be pointed (diverted) to 'normal' numbers. The Ofcom rules used to say that the receiver can be paid revenue (like with 084/087). As they can cost upto 50p/min from a BT landline, they are therefore worse than 0870 and may therefore be viewed as premium rate. The cost of the call gives you an idea of what sort of revenue the receiver will get.

Ofcom has now stopped the receiver benefiting. Instead, an intermediate party can receive revenue on the call, rather than the end subscriber. So what do you think happens, yes the end subscriber puts themselves down as the intermediate party and puts a "dummy" subscriber down as the end subscriber.

Ofcom's numbering lists show that the prefix 070617 is allocated to Hotchilli Communications.

hi there guys!

I have always dreamed of posting in this forum, so here goes...

The above scam would catch me as I believe 0706 is somewhere in Scotland.  (evidently I am thinking what is now 01706)...

I was once caught by a call in Germany - 013737 - which I did not recognise as an 0137 premium number!

sorry Tanllan, my train of thought was obviously one of those new Virgin ones and I forgot to change at Crewe.

Is 01506 somewhere near Glasgow I wonder?
