Title: BBC Radio 5 admission re 0870 Post by derrick on Nov 4th, 2005 at 10:26am
Heard this morning, for the first time ever, the traffic report during the phone in,they gave out the 0870 number to report traffic jams, then added, "costing no more than 8 pence per minute". Whilst this might be a move forward, the statement is not quite true as surely the majority of calls to this number will be from a mobile therefore costing up to 40 p per minute!

Even 8p a minute from a landline is not even strictly correct. Some suppliers charge more at Peak rate
Homecall 8.23p Euphony 8.79p.Skype out 11.50p |

Excellent point derrick. One for us all to emphasise in the responses.

Our local commercial radio station gives a freephone number to report traffic problems in Cornwall and Plymouth.
However, although they go out their way to provide this number, as they want people to call it, the very people who will be in a position to call, will be on their mobiles (after pulling in a layby to make the call legally, or ask your passenger to make the call) Surely a geo number would be more appropriate. |

Absolutely right Shiggaddi.
Yet another uphill battle. What a shame that the beeb no longer employs appropriate telecoms people, or perhaps even in these post-Birt days they still have to charge departments for their advice. |
