Title: So called 0845/0870 Service
Post by thunderfoot on Nov 11th, 2005 at 11:56am
I for one hate 0870/0845 telephone numbers. These are supposed to provide 'local call rate' from anywhere in the country but they must definitely be a 'Premium Rate' (albeit a low rate) which I think provides revenue for Companies that have them.

Why do I think that?

Well, show me a Company that provides an 0845/0870 number AND an option to call a Geographic number. With a Geographic Number AND a Phone provider like 18866 the call will only cost you 3p per call, whereas an 0845/0870 number charges you per minute.

An example of this is I recently signed-up with Freedom2Surf. I was using their Geographic number (01727 811530) in conjunction with 18866 to contact their Technical Support. I was spending over 60 minutes on some calls which, because of 18866, was only costing me 3p per call. When I needed to contact them again, a week or so later, low & behold the Geographic number was no longer in operation and calls were now being charged on a per minute basis. Haven't had my BT bill yet, but not looking forward to it.

Now the question is [glb]WHY have they disabled the Geographic phone number ?[/glb]
I think any Company that provides a 0845/0870 MUST also provide a Georaphic number as an option. If they don't then it only proves that they are obtaining some sort of kick-back on the phone calls.

We have long been aware of these 'scams' , just make sure you put this in to the response you make to Ofcom!

Have actually JUST emailed a copy of my 'gripe' to nts@ofcom.org.uk.

Is there a petition on this site somewhere, that I could add my details too?

Just wonder how many of the individual contacts OFCOM actually read or take any notice of???

Hi thunderfoot. Welcome to the forum.

What we need you to do is to submit your own three responses to the 3 Ofcom consultations running at present. If you look at the other topics on this forum you will see they are described and there are many comments and some help in putting responses together. Please do yours, and don't be tempted to delay it because people then end up forgetting until it is too late.

I hope there isn't a third one.  Having trouble now with just two consultations at the same time.   ???

Dave,

The third "one" is the one concerned with the new Police and emergency services enquiry call centre scam plan using 101 or some other new code  http://www.ofcom.org.uk/media/news/2005/10/nr_20051027  which I consider to be amongst the NGN scams, since I am convinced that the covert plan is eventually to charge for these calls at 10 p per minute, if they can get away with it.

This is therefore also a consultation which any person dis-approving of the NGN scam should reply to, in my opinion.

Ah yes, dorf. Please keep reminding us of this one, as I intend to respond to that one in due course. The deadline is after the other two.
