Got the following from MSE site. Quote: Originally Posted by pin just out of intereset (and me being lazy), what are the BT charges to call these new 05601 numbers? However nowadays you can find it with only a few clicks and is in Adobe Reader PDF format. The only downsize is that it's 44 pages long, although only 290Kb in size. To save you looking its at: http://www.downloads.bt.com/pricing/SpecialisedNos.pdf All 056... prefixed numbers are pricing band g21 and ARE eligible for friends/family discounting. Band g21 "New Voice Services" prices including VAT are: Daytime - ie 6am to 6pm weekdays = 4.89p/min Evening/nighttime = 2.0p/min Weekend - ie 48hrs Sat/Sun = 1.18p/min ie noticably more than local/0845 at 3.0p/1.0p/1.0p respectively but also cheaper than national/0870 at 7.51p/3.75p/1.5p |

I've not tried it, but SkypeIn http://skype.com/products/skypein/ allows you to choose certain UK geographic numbers, as well as US and other country numbers, irrespective of which country you're located in. So if you pick, say, a US number, then US callers can call you at US national rates. And if you pick a UK number, UK callers can call you at geo rates instead of 05x or 08x rates. |

BT Price List tells me that it is charged at g21 rate, is eligible for Friends & Family (including auto-update); so daytime 4.89p (incl vat) evenings and night-time 2p and weekends 1.18p.
Such a shame that Ofcom failed to make them the same as other geographical calls. After all, as BT moves its network to an IP-based one, the costs shrink and shrink - and the opportunities to scam the citizen-consumer increase. Sorry, Rip-Off Britain of course. |

Why not just get a free geographic number from www.sipgate.co.uk instead. You can just use voipcheap or whoever for outgoing calls and if for some reason you actually need an incoming voip number (want a second incoming line on another number for instance) then set the Sipgate one up for that.
Its not just that these 05 voip numbers cost more for BT Option 1 callers but also that they are excluded from inclusive call packages like BT Option 3 and TalkTalk Talk3. Trust Ofcom to allow another light touch scam against the interests of the uk citizen consumer. |
