Title: VOIP without PC Post by Wally on Jan 27th, 2006 at 10:34pm
I have been reading around and I can't seem to find the info that I require so firstly apologies if it is somewhere and I just haven't found it. I have broadband with a standard Sagem modem. I wish to have a second line via VOIP which I will use as a dedicated fax line. I have registered with Sipgate and got a geographic number (thanks to this site) and now I just need to know the choices I have. It would have to be possible to not need the PC on to use the line so the equipment would have to have its own power supply. I would also like, at some point in the future, to share my internet connection with another PC or PCs. Can this all be integrated into the one 'package' so that I can be 'future proof' as far as that is concerned?
Thanks in advance for any help. Wally. |

What you need is an ATA or better still a VOIP router. There are lots of brands to choose from, the right one will function as a modem a router all in one (allowing you to use several PC's and build a small home network). Some (Like the zoom x5v have a connection for a standard phone, others need you to connect an IP Phone such as the Grandstream 2000 or the Sipura 841.
Using this type of IP phone will allow you to run up to four VOIP accounts, giving you freedom of choice and the ability to have inbound numbers outside the UK registered to your phone. (useful if you have family friends or business contacts abroad). There are specific VOIP Forums and discussion groups and forums where you can get more detailed info, equipment reviews and some further assistance. |

There are various possibilities at www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk and www.broadbandstuff.co.uk under telephone adapters.
These totally integrated adsl wireless modems with built in voip ATA ports and control of Quality of Service (to ensure telephone voice calls get priority over file downloading, websuring and email which could otherwise cause choppy sound quality at times) also seem quite interesting:- www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk/Shop/ShopSearch.asp?CategoryID=321 |

Hi Gray I shall be very interested to know whether you have managed to Configure the Settings for a Zoomx5v Router? We have had the Zoom Router since the end of January, but we've only managed to use it for accessing the Net and haven't been able to use it with www.voicecheap.com, www.voipstunt.com, nor, www.sipdiscount.com. Have you had any success in being able to configure the Zoom with any of those VOIP Providers? Your response would be much appreciated. Thank you. |

I wonder if your Zoom router has any built in Voip support? If not then you will not be able to use it standalone to support telephones and will need to use a Voip handset connected to your computer. Most cheaper routers or ADSL wireless modem routers like my Netgear DG834G do not have dedicated Voip Quality of Service management and will not act as an ATA that supports analogue telephone handsets directly when your computer is turned off. For that you need something like the Linksys PAP2 NA or the Sipura SPA 3000 which has far more functions than the Linksys and is available for almost the same price from www.microwarehouse.co.uk |

I don't know what you mean by "built-in VOIP Support"? The packaging states that it works with other VOIP Services, besides the included Service, Global Village. In that case, the Configuration Settings should be accepted. |

I don't have a Zoom x5v (I've got a Linksys SPA2 which works just fine for me!), but, according to the manufacturers details at http://www.zoom.com/products/voip_products.html, there certainly is a phone port. I've had a look over at ADSLguide and came across this post. It doesn't spell out any solutions but would be a good place to ask for further assistance. RDD |

Thank you for responding, Red. Yes, I do know that there is a Phone Port, but that isn't what I was querying. My problem is that it will not register for another VOIP Server. Zoom Technical Support has been very rigid about not helping with any other VOIP Services, as they want customers to use their Global Village Service. They have, at last, agreed to help me tomorrow with the Settings. Hopefully, everything will turn out okay. Thanks again, but if you do hear of anyone else using the Zoom X5v with any of the VOIP Service that I listed, then I shall be very grateful if you will please let me know. |

This page might be of use to you.
http://www.voipuser.org/review_29.html ................................................................................................ http://www.wirelessforums.org/uk-telecom-voip/sipdiscount-configuration-zoom-x5v-router-4483.html The following works for a SIPdiscount account on the zoom X5v (other configurations will probably work too): User ID: Username Authorization ID: Username Password: password Display Name: Username (don't think this is too important) Domain/Realm: sip.voipbuster.com SIP Port: 5060 SIP Proxy address: SIP Proxy Port: 0 Outbound Proxy Address: Outbound Proxy port: 0 The rest was unchanged from a previous voipbuster setup.... Note: SIP Proxy address and Outbound Proxy Address are left blank. If you have a problem here - ie it won't let you leave it blank - just click into the field delete whatever was autofilled, then click your browser back button twice, then forward twice and the field's blank! bit Heath Robinsonish, but it works! ............................................................................................................ Or read the page here http://www.swissipcom.ch/pages/index.php?id=407 and amend to your settings Hope it's of some help |

Mr Very Nice Man, it was indeed a GREAT deal of help. It REGISTERED LOL, and I have been able to make calls. The only thing I want to know is about the ENABLE VOIP Check Box? It still remains unchecked. I was under the impression that it should be checked? Am I right? Again, very many thanks, you are a STAR! I've been trying to get this thing Registered since January. |
