In a new sticky, DaveM had suggested withholding one's number when dialling a geo alternative, by prefixing it with 141, to hide the fact that you are dialling from within the UK.
So if you are also dialling a carrier prefix, e.g. 1899, what sequence do you dial them in? Is it: |

141 1899 01etc
But, of course, one might be using a VoB service, which would show a UK geographic number. ;D |

VoB? Voice over Broadband? You mean it would still show a UK number even after prefixing it 141? :-/ |

No, sorry, what I meant to say was that you might be abroad and using VoB/VoIP, but registered to use a UK geographic number.
So you would be abroad and so legitimately (hah!) using the number for overseas callers. :) |

Don't forgot that you can ask your landline provider to withhold your number. This is done free by all providers (that I'm aware of) and will save having to remember to dial 141 before your required number.
I'm sure there was another thread a long time ago where even if you did 141 they knew you were still calling from within the UK. To get around this, I believe using your mobile will work. |

My number is witheld all the time, but A&L still seem to know I am not calling from abroad!

But cost substantially more (unless it's in included minutes) - which rather defeats the object of using a geo number to avoid 0870 charges! :( |

My apologies to all concerned.
In a bid to help prevent the continuing flow of DUPLICATE numbers coming in to the Unverified list, I just wanted to remind everyone that putting 141 before the Geographical alternative would block their own number (if it was not already blocked by their provider). I hope this additional discussion goes some way to highlighting the continuing problem and alleviating others such as how to use it when utilising an alternate cariier such as 1899. |
