Title: Cheapest 084/7 No's? 1899 or just dial?
Post by dad on Feb 2nd, 2006 at 11:57am
Have recently joined up with 1899 (for day time / week day use), and Just Dial (for evenings and weekends). For those 0845 and 0870 numbers which don't have an alternative land line number, is it cheaper to call through 1899 or Just Dial?

1899 charge 3p connection and 4p/minute for 0845 and 7p/minute for 0870 at all times.

What do JD charge?

The combination of 1899 and JustDial is the one we use - at present it is probably the best combination available.
(For how long?  Anyone's guess, but I bet it won't be in three months time.)

But for 0845 and 0870 calls (if you must make them) we currently dial the 1280 prefix and use BT.

BT charge 3p day and 1p evenings and weekends for 0845, with no connection charge and a minimum call charge of 5p
For 0870 the charge is 7.5p/day,  3.75p evenings and 1.5p at weekends - again, no connection charge etc.

Last time I checked this was less than JustDial I can't check today as their site is being "redeveloped."

If you use BT, then dial your 0870 numbers at the weekends, therefore, if you can wait.

One other benefit of using BT for a few calls, is that if you want BT Privacy, then you must apparently use them for at least some calls.  Anyway, we were able to order BT Privacy (for free caller display) without any queries.

Hope this helps.

Check out 18185, 1899's sister company.

  • There is a connection fee of 4p
  • 0870 costs 4p/min Monday - Friday and 2p/min at weekends
  • 0845 costs 3p/min Monday - Friday and 1p/min at weekends

So it's still cheaper to make calls to 0870 with BT at weekends, but use 18185 during the week.* Calls to 0845 are more expensive than BT at all times with 18185.

Use www.dialaround.co.uk 0844 access number Monday to Friday 6am to 6pm for 0845 calls. This costs 2p/min. At all other times use BT.

What rates do JustDial charge to 084/087 numbers?

Edit:
* As per bigjohn's post below, I stand corrected. Use 18185 during the weekday daytime only (that's Monday to Friday 6am to 6pm) for calling 0870s. BT is cheaper at all other times.

The cheapest supplier of calls to 0870 numbers during the  Evening  is  BT 3.75p as opposed to 18185 4p and JD 3.95p.

Just Dial . 0845/0870 charges are :

0845. P 3.95p       0870. P 7.91p
        E 1.00p                E 3.95p
       W 1.00p               W 1.49p

BT charge 1.50p per minute at the weekends so I think we could have let you off that previous statement counting as an error Dave. ;)

NGM. I think your find BT also charge 1.49p a minute as well at weekends to call 0870 numbers , not 1.50p as you suggest ;)

Or maybe a different approach - get a mobile on O2 with full cashback of line rental - 250 minutes a month free to 0870 and etc
