Title: 0608 , should I be worried?
Post by sandhog on Apr 16th, 2006 at 9:35am

Apologies in advance for being in the wrong section and also for my terrible ignorance of matters telephonic, but

I noticed this morning ( Easter Sunday) that my internet connection is lighting fast compared to usual.

It says I'm connected to a number starting 0608.

In properties, it says my number starts 0808 ( an " Anytime" service).

Now, have I been hi-jacked by a rogue dialler os somesuch, or should I just relax and enjoy the new-found speed, regardless?

regards,

          Sandhog.

Which provider are you with and what package? Am I right in saying you aren't on broadband?

An 0808 is a freephone number and they are used for internet access where you have paid a fixed monthly fee (often referred to as an 'Anytime' package) as opposed to a 'pay as you go' one where you connect with an 0844 or 0845 number.

As for 0608, there is no such number, so it must be 0808.

I agree with Dave, there is no such number beginning 0608 (try dialling it yourself).

Assuming you double-checked the number clearly does read 0608 then I assume its software fault.

Which properties did you check?  Was it the software that was provided by your ISP (most likely) or Windows' own properties as in the Control Panel?

There was a thing about rogue diallers but they were mostly dialling 0871, 09x and other premium rate numbers.
