Title: Alternative to B.T
Post by Furkin on Apr 29th, 2006 at 1:05pm
Hi all,
I'm with BT at the moment, on Together 1 and  BASIC B.Band.
My package includes Call Waiting + Caller I.D AND Call Sign.  For those unaware, this gives a second number on the same line.

I desperately want to move from BT but this feature is very useful to me.
1/ Is anyone aware of alternative suppliers that have a similar feature ?

2/ I also use 1899 (& others) at the moment.  Which alternatives allow these numbers ?

3/ I can't get a very good alt' for Moby numbers,,,, cheap they may be,,, but 90% of the time, the quality of the line is not worth bothering with.      Anyone know of a decent one out there please ?

All advice welcome

Furkin

18185 gives me excellent call quality to mobiles. 4p connection, 5p per minute and all with a v.a.t. invoice.

I currently use phonecheap, as offered on Niftylist for 2p per min any time.
0844 462 00 02
I've not had a problem yet.

You forgot to mention Tanllan that 18185 only charge 2p per min on weekends, + connection.

1899, same company offer 3p per min weekends, but 10p other times.

Another way is to get a new mobile on a 12 month free line rental contract. Often the first few months are doubled.
I've currently got 400 mins & 200 texts for 3 months, then 200 & 100 for the rest of the year. Although I have to pay the line rental, it is all reclaimable.
This way you can ring for free.

Tks AVNM, I had completely overlooked the w/e charges; just as well that they do not increase or I should be very embarrassed. :-[

AVNM: Thanks for that. I have now used this a couple of times & the quality seems as good as anything so far -- & cheap too !   Have you had a BT bill yet to ascertain whether this 2ppm is right ?

OTHERS: Any comments on points 2 & 3 on my original post please ?

thanks all

Only BT have to allow use of 1899, 18185 and 18866 and the like.  Other companies which re-sell BT WLR can block their use (I believe only Talk Talk have done so to date and even that is limited to some subscribers).

You still require a BT Landline. Its a CPS service only available to Virgin Broadband Customers.Note the 6p connection for all calls not included in tariff.

I will stick with 18185 for  better all round prices. £6.99p would give me 174 01/02 calls a month on 18185.I dont make that number of calls a month do you James-Middlesborough.Also i dont pay when i am on holiday.

"What is UKCalls from Loudmouth and how does
it work?

Loudmouth supplies wholesale telephony services through a process known as "Carrier Pre-Select". Carrier Pre-Select allows you to choose another supplier of calls even though you continue to pay your phone line rental to BT.

Are there any charges for the UKCalls service?

Yes, there is a monthly subscription of £6.99. For this, you can make as many calls to UK landlines as you want, at any time of the day for no additional charge. You can find out the cost to call international destinations and mobiles using our
online tariff calculator

Please note that the first 60 minutes of direct-dialled voice calls to geographical local and national phone numbers beginning with 01 and 02 are included in your £6.99 monthly subscription. Subsequent minutes will be charged at 3 pence per minute, so make sure you hang up before the 60th minute and redial to avoid any charges. Non-geographical numbers such as 0845 and 0870 are not part of the £6.99 monthly subscription and a 6p connection fee applies to all calls outside those included in your monthly subscription. "

Very expensive NGN rates.(6p connection)

The cost of calls from your home to 0870 will be:
Daytime:
8.10ppm
Evening:
4.30ppm
Weekend:
2.75ppm

ppm - pence per minute

0845.4.45p peak. 1.75p evenings. 1..45p weekends. 6p connection.

Calls to premium rate numbers are subject to a 6p connection charge.

Calls to premium rate numbers are subject to a 6p connection charge.

Calls to mobile phone numbers are subject to a 6p connection charge.

Calls to international numbers are subject to a 6p connection charge.

Calls to the International directory enquiries service are subject to a 160p connection charge.

Calls to the UK directory enquiries service are subject to a 40p connection charge.

Why not use 1899 'cos, at 3p/call, that would give you 233 calls per month.

I use 18185 because they are the cheapest overall supplier,if you take into account mobile and ngn calls.

I like to keep it simple.
