Title: Unknown number - 0870 6093144 Post by No1_sonuk on May 2nd, 2006 at 6:42pm
I received an odd call on my mobile today, from 0870 6093144 according to the log.
I answered it, and heard what sounded like background noise in a call centre, then it went dead. Apart from dialling it (and incurring the cost) how can I find out who it was? |

With great difficulty.
Ignore it. If it was important, they will call you back at their expense. |

Google gives nothing. Ditto Heinz's comments; best to ignore it.
It may be a telemarketing call. You can register mobiles for Telephone Preference Service (TPS). Legally, marketeers have to screen their list of numbers they call against the TPS' list of registered numbers. |

Just received this from BT (the only info I could find pointed to the number being administered by them):

Same number just called me & hung up- hence I found this site so maybe not a bad thing. I think it may be O2, is that your mobile company too?

Yeah, I'm on O2.
Prior to my TPS registration, I kept getting calls from a communications company asking about renewing my contract. The conversation usually goes something like this: Sales Droid: "Our records show your mobile contract is coming to an end soon." Me: "No, it's not." <Entirely true answer - I have an 18 month contract, not 12> Sales Droid: "Oh. May I ask when it is due?" Me: "You can ask, but I'm not going to tell you." CLICK Me: "Hello?" |

Variation (for added enjoyment) on that theme:
Sales Droid: "Our records show your mobile contract is coming to an end soon." Me: "No, it's not." <Entirely true answer - I have an 18 month contract, not 12> Sales Droid: "Oh. May I ask when it is due?" Me: "Yes." Saled Droid: "Well, when is it due?" Me: "What's your inside leg measurement?" CLICK. |

Whilst I can't say for definate, I don't think that it will be O2. "So how did they know I was on O2?" I hear you ask. The answer's simple. Each of the networks have number prefixes allocated to them. The lists of these prefixes are freely available from the telecommunications regulator, Ofcom. You can download them from its website. For example, 07802 and 07715 are O2 prefixes, 07790 and 07812 are Orange's. Unless a user has transferred to another network and kept their number, then this theory will hold good. As alot of people don't tend to do this, it's very likely that they will 'guess' your network correctly. Thus, when they call you using this techinique, all they know (or think they know) is your network operator. They don't know what tariff you're on or whether it's pay as you go or pay monthly. They won't even know your name and address. I therefore suggest that you keep it that way. You don't know who they are, so would you really want them to know your personal details? |

Hi,
I just had the same experience. Was phoned by 0870 6093144 and the line was just quiet for like 10, 15 seconds then started getting call centre background noise and then they hung up. Im also on O2. They usually ask as already said, whether or not you have an 18month or 12month contract, and my contact does end in a month and a half. I got my O2 contract through dialaphone |
