Title: BBC censorship Post by idb on Jun 5th, 2006 at 1:24pm
The main BBC news today - http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/london/5046346.stm -
7 July report highlights failings Absolutely no mention of the 0870 number used for the casualty bureau (which is detailed in the full report at http://www.london.gov.uk/assembly/reports/7july/report.pdf ) The Guardian - http://www.guardian.co.uk/attackonlondon/story/0,,1790707,00.html - and the Independent - http://news.independent.co.uk/uk/politics/article625511.ece - both refer to the 0870 issue. It appears that, prior to the publication, there was a reference to the 0870 matter on the BBC page, however it appears to have conveniently disappeared, presumably removed at, perhaps, the request of Capita?! From google news search, 9-20 EDT [London bombs inquiry report due BBC News, UK - 14 hours ago ... review committee has heard that among problems encountered was an "antiquated" and unreliable radio network underground, and a national rate 0870 number for ... ] This is further evidence of just how much the Beeb is answerable to Capita. |

Remind me please, who was it who 'loaned' NL £1,000,000 (which had no bearing whatsoever on Capita winning BBC and government contracts), who just happens to be Capita's boss?

Even though the second article mentions “0870", it is followed with the words ‘national rate’. Again reinforcing the big deception that 0870 is a national rate call. BT allows this deception by not making a clear and unequivocal statement that local and national calls cost the same and that the cost of calls to 087x and 084x numbers are charged at special rates. The fiction of the so called ‘standard local and national tariff’ should be ended.
BT should change its image from a organisation that is duplicitous and a facilitator of deceptive practices, to one that act in a straightforward way. To be credible, BT’s statement that ‘national and local rate’ has been abolished has to be conspicuously stated on all bill and web pages until the fact is lodges firmly in the minds of the public and media |

The CEO of BT Retail Ian Livingston finds it politically expedient to say one thing about 084/7 numbers being a total disgrace and while his organisation then does quite another in terms of still churning out phone bills with the words "Lo-Call" and "National Rate" against them. See http://business.scotsman.com/banking.cfm?id=764772005 I note that You and Yours no longer seems willing to cover the 084/7 calls issue in any way and has ignored any of my recent attempts to contact the program. Could that just be due to requests from the new Director General to desist from all such anti 0870 coverage? :o >:( |

I think that the more time goes on, the more there is for a Panorama investigation. The 084/087 NTS number rip-off is just the tip of the iceberg. The latest consultation that closed last week on the proposal to deregulate BT's price controls is the latest injustice to the UK's citizen-consumers, if they implement option 4 (where BT has given its "assurances"). |
