Post by malcb on Jul 16th, 2006 at 8:56am
According to my caller display, I am being called by the above number, which beggars the questions

1) is this really possible
2) who is trying to call

anyone shed any light???

Thank you James  (oooh, I feel like I'm in a film....)

Well that explains it; I had half a mind that it was some sort of scam, but I couldn't see what advantage the 0845 number gave them - apart from anonymity.

I shall continue to ignore them, as I do the withheld and international callers of this world - CallerID is a wonderful thing.

Hi there!

You could have at a cost Anonymous Call Rejection from BT, and this will stop anyone / any company calling who stop their number from being withheld.  If you did have this service, you would have to pay an extra fee to Bt, however the Police, Fire and Ambulance would not be able to phone back or even they may NOT want to phone back, should they need to, although if anyone knows exactly what they do or even correct me, I would appreciate it.

See this link:

https://www.bt.com/SelectServices/index.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@0965441292.1153246210@@@@&BV_EngineID=cccgaddigemjjimcflgcefkdffndflf.0&BV_SessionID=@@@@0965441292.1153246210@@@@&BV_EngineID=cccgaddigemjjimcflgcefkdffndflf.0&showsub3=SS_advanced_features&subProduct=SS_Anonymous_Call_Rejection&showsub4=SS_anonumouscall

Hope this is of some assistance.

not quite sure what you mean. If you were to dial 141 112 (or 141 999) the operator would still see your number and will pass it on. Whether the emergency services choose to use withheld outgoing lines is up to them. I did give a talk at BT Martlesham about this some years ago, but presume that the attendees have now retired. Certainly the level of take up of 0845 etc, combined with the general errors and mess, would appear to indicate that some of my delegates are no longer working...

I think he means that having Anonymous caller rejection means that the police service, other government departments, companies, etc that withhold their number will not be able to ring you.  What these government departments may have to do is ask their switchboard to make the call assuming that at the very least their switchboard number is not withheld but only their extensions.

Right, got it. Tks.
Now if we can just have this punitive charge reduced (hello Ofcom) and ACR bundled in as a select service. :)

Hi there!

With regards to the cost of ACR from BT at £4.00 a month, I will say, that it is a rip off charge.  BT make a nice tidy sum from their select services.

BT, if you are watching these pages, cut the cost down by at least 50% please!

If you get a VoIP service, ALL of that functionality - and HEAPS more - is generally included! I pay about £7.00 a month for 500 mins of calls anywhere in North America. I get call blocking, call forwarding, distinctive caller ID, simultaneous ringing, distinctive ringing, do not disturb (calls go to voicemail between set hours), internet voicemail messages, call forwarding, call broadcasting, anonymous call blocking...... the list goes on.

At BT rates, I think that would be about £40.00 by now........  ;)

Oh, and did I say that it's about 1p per minute to UK geographic numbers?  ;D

I'm picking up on old threads, but purely to settle some things that appear to have been left partially unanswered. If the police (or I imagine fire, ambulance etc) needed to get back to you from a 999 call, we will. Whether this be from just selecting a 'public line' (rather than internal outbound), then dialing 91470 before the number, or in cases of some funky barring, with the assistance of the BT operator.

The only people who won't be able to call you are officers from their airwave radios.. those dial out as witheld, and there is no way around it.
