Title: Redgate medical centre - Bridgwater Somerset
Post by Saner on Aug 9th, 2006 at 9:35am
HIya,

This medical centre recently (last 6 months) changed to an 0844 number, its number is

(08444) 772593

I cant find a replacement number via name or number search here, if anyone knows it, could they please let me know as its costing me a small fortune in long drawn out calls to them!

Thanks in advance

Saner.

192.com gives:

REDGATE MEDICAL CENTRE
WESTON ZOYLAND ROAD
BRIDGWATER
SOMERSET
TA6 5BF

01278 444 411

I also found:

Redgate Pharmacy, Redgate Health Centre, Weston Zoyland Road, Bridgwater,Somerset, TA6 5BF
Tel: 01278 445333

And:

Redgate Medical Centre
Weston Zoyland Road,
Bridgwater
Somerset TA6 5BF

Phone Number      01278 444411
Fax Number      01278 446816

Email      info@redgatemedicalcentre.co.uk
Website      www.redgatemedicalcentre.co.uk

The 444411 number is still given on the "appointments" page of ther website.

As with all these changeovers to 0844, the old number has almost certainly been replaced with a message telling you to dial the rip-off one. All the old pages I've found on the web have yet to be updated.

And as usual, the 0844 number they have chosen is 5p/min at all times!

444411 Just gives the "This number has changed too 08444" message

The other is a dead number.

Bugger, thanks for looking anyways.

If you call them, make sure you say that you tried the number on their website and it gave a message that you need a different number. Then perhaps you can claim you can't call the 0844 number from your (home/work/mobile) phone, so could they please tell you the new 01278 number.

I think something like this has been tried including asking via the Freedom of Information Act, which turned up empty.  I suspect that NEG, the owners of these numbers, sets up another geographical number for the surgery in question for which they (NEG) are only aware and then of course have the 0844 routed to it.

To the surgery/medical centres, they will not be aware (or even care in some cases) that their new 0844 number just gets routed to an ordinary geographical number as it's all done behind the scenes by NEG.  Obviously NEG have no intentions of letting surgeries & MC's know this as its not in their (NEGs) interest.  I can imagine NEG using the spiel that these calls cost similar to that of local rate (they may even say it costs local rate) but obviously fail to mention that it may not be possible to call from abroad or that 0844 isn't included in any tariffs, and more importingly that calls from mobiles and payphones are a lot higher.

I've speculated before on other threads for NEGed surgeries on which telco(s) NEG uses. This page says that they use Cable & Wireless.

There are two prefixes allocated to C&W within the 01278 area code:
01278 36 Change date: 05/2006
01278 48 Change date: 03/1995
