I am getting up to 3 calls a day from this number - When I first started to get them they asked for a female who does not live here and hasn't done for over 4 years. I explained this to them but the calls kept coming. Now when I answer the phone (being a male) the line just goes dead.
Anyone any idea who this is so that I can write to try and stop the calls.

I've done a google search but couldn't get a hit.

The number was originally allocated to Cable & Wireless but due to number portability it may no longer be with them.

You could contact C&W and mention to them that you are getting silent phonecalls from 0870 333 0159 and you were wondering if they could at least tell you which company it belongs to as silent calls is considered a misuse of communications under the Communications Act and you are trying to determine the company that is using it otherwise you'll ask Ofcom to look into it.

The thing is that C&W are under no obligation to give out who uses that number to us consumers so its hit or miss there.

Actully I Found it belongs to Interim Justicia???? Very famous debt collector for working with ebay and paypal...

That is their web address. They don't understand the words. "I have paid".

From the telephone conversations I have had with them, I find them to be rude. I have had them hang up the telephone on me before now.

I believe they can transfer you to their Call Centre which I assume is based in Liverpool as that is the accent all their advisors seem to have!!!

I (now living in Suffolk) have just had a call from this number asking to speak to the man who bought my house from me (in London) last December.
When I wanted to know how on earth they had got my number for him she hung up.  I will attempt to contact them again to find this out!!

I am so sick of being hassled at home that I have decided to find Owen James personal numbers and post them on the net so that on a specific date everyone who wishes to can call him and call him and just keep calling him so that he can appreciate the actions of this company.

If you don't owe them anything, why not get a court injunction against them to stop them harrassing you? Also now you have the number get your provider to block all calls from that outfit.

It's not exactly a good solution, but BT offer a service "choose to refuse".  They don't promote it much, but you can block individual callers from calling you.   You either enter a list of phone numbers, or dial a short code after an unwanted call.  It even blocks calls from witheld numbers!  This is different to the anonymous call rejection service, which is a blanket block and won't help if they release a number.

Callers hear a message "The person you are calling is not accepting calls from you at this time."  It annoys them a little :D

Can't remember the charge off-hand, but I believe it's possible for BT's malicious calls bureau to let you have it for free for a short time.

Another option would be to write to them informing them that the person they are looking for has moved on, with something similar to the following included.

"I will regard any further approaches other than in writing as harassment under S40 of the Administration of Justice Act 1970, and any inappropriate written contact as harassment under that Act or S1 of the Malicious Communications Act 1988.

I am advised that your approach so far may already be considered in breach of regulations governing debt collection practices. If necessary I will report the matter immediately to the OFT which may have implications for both your own company and any employees/ clients involved."

I have on occasion used a similar letters for my clients - and it has eased some of the pressure for them.

re - intrum justitia - we had a call today from these people but I know I don't owe any company anything - as someone mentioned they deal with ebay & paypal and so do I but I don't owe them anything either

thus I do what I do for some other numbers - simply save in my caller id list on my phone as 'neveranswer' or 'donotreply'  - if they ring when I am in then they will get the answerphone after 8 rings and if they ring when I am out then who cares - that way at least they are having to pay for each call

Next time they ring, why not be really polite & civil to them, explain that your phone is due to be cut off tomorrow because you are switching suppliers, and in the meantime your new number is 0909 944 1230, after all, these people need a stern talking to.

I have joined your request to the existing thread on Intrum Justitia, so have a look at the postings above. There are several entries in the database. 01789 415181, which is also given above is a Stratford-upon-Avon number, so I think that's the main number at the head office - I would try that.

We were getting silent calls from this number, so I contacted BT who were very helpful and at the time of writing charge approx £10 for 3 mths for their 'choose to refuse' service.It was going to take 24hrs to activate.
In the meantime I telephoned Collette McAllister using the number given on one the posts, complaining about the calls. She called me back and it appears to be a error on their part..our number was attached to a address in the same city but not known to us.
Ms McAllister promised to have our number removed from their database.I wait to see if this is indeed done.
I would like to thank GMC555 for publishing the number, and other posts for the useful information they gave.I think in these situations it pays to be polite but very firm and quote the Communications act .

I received letters for Intrum Justitia claiming I owed money to a now defunct DVD seller... Brittania Music and Film. I immediately rang the number asking for clarification and suspecting a scam. I was told the matter would be referred back to the original company. I received a second letter one month later for IJ which now added a penalty charge of £12.50 to my mysterious debt. Again I called them immediately but this time was answered with threatening demands for payments... my credit rating would suffer if I did not pay by 2pm that very day. I attempted to be friendly and sensible but was informed that I wasn't taking the matter seriously enough. I mentioned I had never heard of the company and was reluctant to pay anything to someone I didn't know. The operator suggested I looked them up on the internet which I then did. Many people were in my situation... alarmed or bemused by their new found debt. So again I rang IJ, announced I was recording the call, (which I was), and expressed my doubts. I was then told that the "debt" would be written off! That I hope is that, but I remain cautious. But if you find yourself in a similar situation, hopefully the matter will be as easily resolved

I have been through the entries for Intrum Justitia and cleared out the junk.

The numbers 0870 150 9530, 0870 159 0130 and 0870 333 8020 all answer as IJ and redirect to 0844 375 0643.

The geographic numbers 0151 473 2626, 0151 472 1549 and 01789 415181 are all not recognised (previously verified). Likewise 0151 472 0150 (was unverified).

IJ's contact page gives the UK office as:

0844 576 5734 answers with a message saying that it is IJ and is closed and opens Mon-Fri 8am-7pm. This is the same as 0844 375 0643, 0870 010 2433 and 0870 909 0091.

The clue would seem to be 0151 472 71xx. 7119 rings unanswered, as does 7155. However 7156 is answered with the same "closed" recording as mentioned in the previous paragraph and I have therefore listed it as the alternative.
