Title: Is this a legit mesage service 0871 208 9407 Post by andre1d on Nov 21st, 2006 at 5:33pm
Hi all
I have received a message from "The Information Team" telling me that I have a message to pick up and to call 0871 208 9407. Does anyone know whether this is a legit service or just another high charge scam? Has anyone else received calls like this, whether at home or in a business environment? Thanks |

It's a scam, please don't call it!
The only voicemail messages you can get are on your network provider's voicemail system (if you have it switched on) like O2 Voicemail or Orange Answerphone. That is accessible by dialling it's number or (usually) speed dial 1. |

These scammers are also using a 070 number.

Hi Gang!
Read this thread with interest, as I've just received such a call (from 0871 208 9406) asking me to ring 0871 208 9408 for my message! Fortunately, it didn't "feel" right, so I didn't hang on for more than about 15 secs. Thanks for the warning! |

Thanks to SouthendMike we can now see that they are using a cluster of numbers around 0871 208 94XX.
Also from the messages in the link posted by acezing, avoid calling numbers beginning with 070 776 XXX as they are probably a similar scam. |

Amazing isn't it that this New Labour government can ban people from smoking even in a private club set up only for smokers but it can't ban people from being scammed when they make a phone call. :-? :o :'(

I just got a call from what 1471 presented as 0871 208 9406 where a man's voice said "hello" and then hung up.
Blatant scam in my opinion and I am not calling to find out what it is. Anyone know how to get these guys shut down? More reports here: http://blog.hackingcough.com/2006/08/endemols_getric.htm Google tags: 08712089406; 08712 089406; 08712 089 406 |

Called ofcom to report it, they are aware and are logging complaints against this number. I would recommend calling and reporting (beware, they have a Kafka-eque call tree). They have a trigger level but will not advise how high it is.

Are you registered with www.tpsonline.org.uk not to receive unsolicited phone calls? If so you can report them to tpsonline.org.uk who will only send them a polite letter telling them not to do it again. If you are TPS registered you also need to file an official complaint with www.ico.gov.uk (the Information Commissioner's Office) who can issue enforcement notices requiring these companies to desist from such action or face prosecution. When 0871 numbers are transferred to ICSTIS Premium Rate regulation in Feb 2008 you will be able to complain to them but you can't for the time being. |

Make sure to also report them to the TPS and the ICO if you are TPS registered on your line. |

Unfortunately my missus (line is in her name) won't let me register it with TPS as "it stops people ringing you with offers etc". Grr. Quite amusingly I have received a number of requests from organisations recently questioning my communication preferences, "we just wanted to check you were sure when you said no further communication as we want to sell you more ****"

Hi Gang - it's SouthendMike here again.
"9406" has just come up as a missed call on my Office Line this time (previously it was my mobile.) When is OFCOM or someone going to do something about these rogues? Answers on a postcard to ... Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you all. |

Hi
Thanks for a great website and forum. I've just received one of these calls from the "information team". They used a different number though. 1471 revealed I was called on 0871 872 3790. The second thread I checked (this one) I found the answer to my query - result :D Is this from the same company - how can I check? Calv |

It's the information team scam. 0871 number IIRC, 10p per minute or thereabouts. There's more posts on here about it.

I too just received the 'Hi, this is John from the Information Team' message. The call was left by 0871 240 9000 and asked me to phone back 0871 240 9911. Scam alarm bells went off in my head soon after listening to it, since there was no mention of a company name or any indication that he knew my name.
Reported to Ofcom this evening via their website - http://www.ofcom.org.uk/complain/landline/nuisance/silent/?itemid=284827 - took me a while to find this form! I recommend reporting it if you've received one of these messages as action is only taken if Ofcom receive some (unknown) number of complaints. Could this website have a category for suspected scam numbers? I would have liked to find something other than 'number not found' when I searched, and it might just help others avoid calling out of curiosity. |
