You should have said it was a missed call and not just posted the number without any information at all.
I've done a google search and it revealed nothing. Don't ring them back as they are making money from you calling them back. The number was originally allocated to BT so you could try asking BT could they tell you the name of the company which uses that number as you are getting missed calls, etc. Tell them you are thinking of making a complaint to Ofcom. |

Who did they claim they were? I have actually rung 0870 321 0979 and got the following recorded message: The number you have dialled does not receive any incoming calls. We apologise for the inconvenience. So this does not appear to be a telephone scam but some other scam. Does anybody have any idea what it might be? |

Lompos, why did you dial that (the wrong) number? Or is it a typo? :-? |

Hi Everyone
Thanks for all your messages. I just would like to say the following :- Never once did I say this was a nusiance call - I was just hoping that someone out there would have known who the 0870 number belonged too... When I received the two calls from this number they said they were from the police station and that someone had come to them to make a report that someone had attempted to abuct my child from school - even though the field was full of parents waiting to collect their children (lol)... :o Confused....as my child was sitting in the same room as me, when this "police officer" phoned.... I thought that it might have been someone playing a sick prank on me and when I phoned the 0870 number and got that message that this number does not accept incoming calls - I thought I'd smelt a rat... I phone the police station and made some enquiries about having received these two calls and they did not have any record on there system about it and they informed me that all their numbers either begin with 0845 or the local area code... As of this evening - I have since found out that the person that phoned from this 0870 number was in fact a genuine call from a police station and that this line from the Police Officer that deals with children cases/reports does in fact not accept incoming calls... Thanks once again for all your help and advise - and hopefully this will put the case to rest... Have a Merry Christmas ;) |

Hi Mother_of_one,
I wasn't aware of any police that use 0870. All police stations use 0845 or a geographical number. |

Thank you for the clarification. This matter is clearly for the police and it is good that you now have two-way contact with them.
All the same it is a bit strange that the police use an 0870 number that one cannot call back rather than just prefix the number they are calling with 141 which would have the same effect. May be that would be too much to expect from a busy police officer who has other things to worry about? However, whichever method they use they should be instructed to always provide a number to call back, if for nothing else just for the called party to verify that their call wasn't a hoax. (Dave, the number is my earlier post was a typo, I did call the right number) |

:) I can confirm that this number is from the police and is a generic number used by a number of departments. The number can not be rang back due to the forces policy of not given out individual office numbers resulting in the use of the 0845 to get hold of them. Even the local numbers for direct contact to the police stations may be phased out in favour of using the 0845's instead and going through switchboards. (which isnt helpfull when you are told to contact them personally) :-? Originally all Police forces would have their numbers withheld on dialing out and I for one do not like answering to these calls either. I assume that individual forces will arrange for BT to show the 0845 number to at least give people a vague idea who is calling eventually :) |
