In response to a fatal coach accident last night, the usual NGN has been issued by an authority that is assumed to be competent:

Thames Valley Police has issued an emergency telephone line on 0845 8505505, which is also the number for witnesses who have not already spoken to police.

Given, according to the Beeb, the following,

"It's quite likely there were holidaymakers and certainly some foreign nationals on board as well when the coach left Heathrow," he said.

"We know we had some Polish nationals as well as Scottish people."

when will these people ever realize the crass unsuitability of using these numbers? When will Ofcom intervene?

I have raised this with an MP and GLA member.

I first contacted this site and OFCOM after the London Bombings so this touches a nerve with me. Nothing seems to have been learned!

I still find that 99% of people think that 0845 is local and 0870 is national (as demonstrated by recent posts today) yet OFCOM doesn't see this as a problem. Unbelievable.

These cretins who are supposed to be providing a public service, and not covertly pocketing from the public used an 0870 number for the train crash, see here.

At least National Express issued an 0121 Birmingham number for their own helpline.  It would be even more sick if they were going to release on 0870 number and profit from the incident.
