Can anyone help? I've just discovered that my BT bill is charging me for hundreds of calls per qtr to 08709 040013. Each call lasts exactly 9 secs and there are variable number of calls pretty well each day costing about 3p each. Over a qtr this adds up to £6 or more. Bt can't tell me who this number belongs to and if I DO dial it there are some strange elctonic noises certainly not a modem or fax but like that.
How do I find out who owns this number??????? Even thsi site doesn't find a match. HELP NEEDED ~ Edited by Dave: Thread title amended |

What equipment do you have connected to your line?
Do you have a burglar alarm that is connected, Sky box or fax etc? |

YOU MAY HAVE CRACKED IT - DON'T LEAVE THE SKY BOX CONNECTED BUT RECENTLY HAD A BURGLAR ALARM MONITORING SYSTEM CONNECTED - THAT MUST BE IT. I'LL CALL THEM TOMORROW TO SEE IF IT'S CORRECT- MANY THANKS :)

What sort of alarm is it? Others may be in the same boat, so if we know, it might help.

It's an alarm with MyGuard monitoring and it's the monitoring that causes the call and cost. Apparently it polls back to a system test and is set for x times a day plsu every set and cancel. I've found out you can change this to once a day or week or whatever and hence reduce call/cost. Very much hidden cost as they use an 0870 number.

If they won't reimburse you for the cost of calls, is it in the contract? I can't give you legal advice, but if there is not mention of this then I would approach trading standards if the alarm company isn't forthcoming. If it mentions about the call back but neglects to mention the fact it's an 0870 number and/or its cost, then perhaps they have a case to answer. |

New here. Some time ago I signed up with onetel cheap & free calls etc. For several months every week day morning between 4 & 6am up to 8 calls were being made to a similar number lasting 9 seconds. After many heated exchanges with Telewest, I disconnected the Onetel router. Guess what they stopped. Threw it in the bin. |
