The RSPCA use 0870 numbers exclusively and this animal hospital is no exception. The geographic number simply directs one to various 0870 numbers.

The hospital has been featured by the BBC (Rolf Harris) http://www.bbc.co.uk/nature/programmes/tv/a_hospital/index_winner.shtml

I tried but could not find the "real" geog number for the hospital.

In this situation, I think we can justify the RSPCA using the 0870, as long you're not kept waiting.

It's still the same though - many people do not know the cost of calling 084/7 numbers so an 09xx number, with a similar cost, would be truly transparent (and, as you say, most people would accept that as justifiable in the case of the RSPCA).

lompos i also agree the people phoning are the people that should be the least well of amongst us so do not have the money to use any other number the rspca should no better
