Title: Surf the internet on mobiles
Post by David160 on Mar 21st, 2007 at 4:32pm
I am thinking of buying a mobile that can surf the net, like a blackberry. Which numbers are used to access the internet and how much do they cost, can we use them in the free call allocation ?

Usually you connect to the internet on a mobile either by GPRS (aka 2.5G) or 3G. Think of them as being a mobile broadband, where 3G is faster than GPRS. You pay for the amount of data rather than the length of time you are connect.

I suggest you post on the MoneySavingExpert.com forum as there are plenty of people over there who will tell you more.

Apparently so - if you use a geographical number.

Try 020 8114 9845.

You may find this thread interesting. It's in the Requests section of the forum and is on 01/02 numbers for ISPs.  ;)

I've seen this GeoISP thing thrown about in here a few times, and I'm a sceptical about it. The WHOIS seems to suggest it is a person running it, and there is no contact information for this person either. Yes, they could be a very nice person offering a service to everyone, but I don't like it personally.

The dial-up number for GeoISP is 020 8114 9845. There is now address given for geoisp.co.uk but the name is David Knell.

The prefix 020 8114 is allocated to Coulomb Limited.

A Google cached version from 18 Feb 2007 of Coulomb's About page has a David Knell as CEO. He is now gone from there.

If you Google "david knell" coulomb you will find loads of pages mentioning him.

Dave,

Thanks for that. It seems highly odd that the web page has no reference to its parent company, and clearly this "David Knell" person isn't running that site for personal use (despite what WHOIS says).

That they might, but the GeoISP website has absolutely no mention of who runs it. Only with some detective work can you find out (Google doesn't return Coulumb as a top result...).
