Title: Geographical Number
Post by bravo on Apr 20th, 2007 at 4:42pm
I have been given a Geographical number +353 12794027 instead of an 0870 number [Dell (UK)] 08703664026. How do I dial this new number please? Do I just leave out the "+", and what about "01"? Thank you very much.

From UK replace + with 00

The + sign in front of an international number is merely indicating that the number given should be prefixed by the international acces code from the country from which the number is being dialled.  From the UK, in line with most countries, the international access code is 00.

Therefore the number you should dial is 00353 127 94 027 which is the Dell technical support centre in Dublin, Ireland.

The cheapest way to call a geographical number in Ireland is via one of the intrenational access services:

0844 200 7575 or 0844 200 2020. Either cost  0.5p/min

So, you should dial one of the 0844 numbers first and when prompted the 00353 127 94 027 number.

I am now confused. Can I change the number +353 12794027 (from 0870 366 4026) to give an 11 figure number starting with 01? If the "+353" is a code for Ireland what do I do? Thank you very much.
Bravo.

Bravo was confused by misleading information which has since been removed.[/edit]

You simply replace + with 00. This is a call to Dublin in the Republic of Ireland. Don't use BT though!

Courtesy of niftylist, you could also use 0844 200 1515 at 0.5p per min.
So Bravo, to do as suggested......

Dial one of the 0844 numbers given.
You will be greeted with an automated message.
Enter the target number of 00353 12794027   followed by #
The number will ring at the other end, so carry on as usual.
The 0844 will be charged to your BT account at 0.5p per min, other suppliers may vary.
Suggest you do it during reasonable office hours.
Don't worry about the warning of "don't use BT" then being told to dial and end up charged by BT. It was intended to mean don't dial directly through BT, but to use the method described.
This is a common practise and is good advice echoed by all on this forum.

The reason for the + is because different countries use different access codes. The UK uses 00 whereas the USA uses 011, for example.

The 1 at the beginning of a UK STD code is part of the code and is always dialled whenever the code is dialled. It's never dropped as that would mean conflicts in numbering which is the very reason it's there for in the first place.

You only drop the national prefix, in the UK it is 0, to replace it with the international access code. For example 01234 xxxxxx becomes +44 1234 xxxxxx, which, from the USA/Canada would be 011 44 1234 xxxxxx.

In most of Europe the international access code is 00, so you would call it 00 44 1234 xxxxx.

I have left spaces so as to differentiate between international access code, country code, STD area code and local number.

And so, the Irish example is 00 353 1 2794027 from the UK or 011 353 1 2794027 from USA/Canada.
