Hi, couldn't find the correct topic to place this so here goes...

Every so often I keep getting a call from this number asking for someone who has never lived at this address. Can anyone tell me know it can be? BTW, when I call back, it just gives a dead dial tone.

The number is 0141 270 6400 - It's a Glasgow based number, Operator: Thus?

Google finds a couple of results here.

0141 270 is a Thus-owned number. If you are concerned about it, you could contact Thus (try their enquiries number - 0800 027 5848) and see what they can do about it. I suspect they won't be able to reveal who owns the number, but if a number of people are having issues with cold calling from it, they may be able to take action against the owner.

It may be that the 0141 CLI number is spoofed anyway.

If the CLI is spoofed, as Dave suggested, then this will be a case to bring up with your telecoms provider. Again, they probably can't reveal the real number, but they may be able to block it from contacting you, or alert the relevant authorities.

What I'm saying is that I believe CLIs can be spoofed. We have had reports of calls from numbers which don't exist such as 01111 and the like, so that proves that it can happen.

I've just called it and it gives half a ring and then drops out, so the number is in service. It is therefore probably a genuine number and being as it is Thus (a business telephone provider) the company which uses it probably has a block of numbers. Therefore, I would try nearby numbers as in 0141 270 6401, 02 , 03 etc and going downwards, 0141 270 6000 etc.

This post (the only one I could find in your Google search link) seems to suggest numbers nearby also give the same response.

Maxwell Bruce, a recruitment company uses 0141 270 6300 and other 63xx numbers, judging by the fax number.

According to these Google results West of Scotland Water uses 0141 270 6500.
