I think that's the last of the PreDial numbers now so, if that one doesn't work, you'll either have to wait or lash out 0.5p/minute dialling your 0845 number during the evening or at the weekend from a BT line. 01635 57 81 07 01635 57 85 62 01793 23 82 80 |

You've quoted my post without even reading it
What on earth is the point of endlessly trying something out, then complaining about it not working, when someone has clearly said that the service is said to be out of use for a few days? - and that it isn't intended for these numbers in peak periods anyway? |

Ashek, I feel that your responses on this post are completely out of line. People here are trying to help, and all you do is put them down. I do not believe that there are any 01 or 02 call-through services that provide access to 0845/0870 numbers without you paying for them (although I am not an expert on such things).
We are sorry if the responses here are not the answers you want, but please remain civil and don't attack other forum members. |

Title: Re: Does any 1 know the cheap way to call 0845/087 Post by rbatte1 on Mar 14th, 2008 at 8:41am
Okay, so I'm a confused newbie too. Out of range of Broadband, unable to get anyone to supply the line except BT, with a children means that the dial-up cost is getting up. Such is the joy of living out in the sticks.
I think that Ashek is, like me, trying to get internet access for a minimal cost. I am not so naive to hope to get it for free, but I currently dial up to an 0845 and therefore am non-subscription. Calls are routed by dialing 138 in fornt to the phone co-op (I think) so are already supposed to be cheaper than BT alone. I have tried, in vain, to get a geographic number to call as I think that this would be cheaper too, but still at some cost. From what I have read here over the past few weeks (before registering) it seems that 18185 is most people's preference. Are they a decent company to place trust in (bank details etc.)? and does their service work well? Many thanks, in advance, Robin :-? [smiley=beer.gif] [smiley=dankk2.gif] |

Can you not go onto a internet tariff where you pay a fixed amount to your ISP every month and it provides you with a freephone dial up number? |
Title: Re: Does any 1 know the cheap way to call 0845/087 Post by rbatte1 on Mar 14th, 2008 at 9:28am
That is, of course, an option. From a very low normal cost (basically BT line rental plus 3/4 short calls a month) we are now getting a calls cost of around £10 or so each month. The best I have found so far is advertised as £7.99 but becomes £8.99 when you try to apply.
Any better? It seems more of a risk to contract for such a minimal gain. We would be looking for a long term arrangement, so trawling through the myriad of start-up offers where the true cost is buried away is driving me bonkers :o [smiley=dankk2.gif] again. Robin |

I suggest you look at an independent review site like thinkbroadband, although not sure whether it also covers dial-up. |
Title: Re: Does any 1 know the cheap way to call 0845/087 Post by rbatte1 on Mar 14th, 2008 at 10:41am
Yes, yes, yes, yes, ....... no.
Doh! Oh well, it was all going so well. Plenty of very useful stuff about BB, but not dial-up. Shame. On the face of it, I have a no-brainer (or is that I have no brain ::) ) Phone co-op prefix with 138 for 0845 dial up is 3.9p/1p/1p for weekday/weekend/evening Using 18185 (guess prefix is 18185) cost listed 3p/.5p/.5p Am I missing something about fixed minimum call charge/call connection charge or something? Is there a fee to use 18185. It doesn't say that there is anywhere obvious. I'm trying to apply the rule of "If it looks too good, it usuaully is." :-/ [smiley=dankk2.gif]again, Robin |
Title: Re: Does any 1 know the cheap way to call 0845/087 Post by oldharryrocks on Mar 14th, 2008 at 12:24pm
rbatte1.
So you have a BT Line but you place calls through the Phone Coop by using a short code 138 because you only make a few short geo calls. Is that correct? If thats the case and you can find a 0845 dial up service you could nominate the 0845 number as your BT Best Friend and reduce the cost of calls to it by 40% Eg 1.2p peak 0.03p evenings.A 6p connection charge will apply. 18185 charge a 5p connection for calls using their 18185 access number. |
Title: Re: Does any 1 know the cheap way to call 0845/087 Post by rbatte1 on Mar 14th, 2008 at 3:34pm
Dear oldharryrocks,
[smiley=dankk2.gif]for the nod, and yes there are only a few national and a very few local calls. The 0845 number is by far the biggest use. I'm not sure I get the maths though. A 40% saving on 3.9p (BT peak) is 60% of 3.9p=2.34p A 40% total cost on the same 3.9p is still 1.56p The weekend & evenig rate of 1p is easier at 0.6p or 0.4p depending quite what 40% you mean, so it is very marginal either way over 18185, however the BT site suggests I only get 10% for normal F&F with 20% for Best Friend, so that my blow that one out. Perhaps with higher price plans there is more discount available. A very good pointer though. I will see what other combinations I can work on. |
Title: Re: Does any 1 know the cheap way to call 0845/087 Post by Heinz on Mar 14th, 2008 at 3:38pm
Using the 18185 prefix from a BT landline will cost you 5p + whatever the per minute charge for the number you're calling is at the time/day you're calling.
Just using BT will cost you 6p + whatever the per minute charge for the number you're calling is at the time/day you're calling. In the case of calling 0845 numbers, the comparisons are: 0845-------Weekday- Evening---Weekend BT --- 6p + 2p/min. -½p/min.--2p/½p/min. (BT's Day/Evening prices apply weekends too) 18185- 5p + 3p/min. -½p/min.- -½p/min. --(18185 has a separate weekend price) 0870-------Weekday--Evening-_--Weekend BT --- 6p + 6p/min. -1½p/min._6p/1½p/min.-(BT's Day/Evening prices apply weekends too) 18185- 5p + 6p/min. -4p/min.-_--2p/min. --(18185 has a separate weekend price) |

Has anyone noticed that calling 0870 numbers with 18185 is cheaper through the 020/0808 access numbers than it is with the 18185 prefix?
With 020/0808 numbers it's 3p/min Mon-Fri and 1p/min at the weekend with a 4p connection charge, same as with 0845. Well, that's what it says on the website. Ringing a 0870 number via the 0808 access number says it costs 5p/min now (Thursday daytime). :-/ With the 18185 prefix it's 6p/min Mon-Fri 6am-6pm, 4p/min Mon-Fri 6pm-6am, 2p/min weekends. Connection charge is 5p. |

The website shows the 0870 price as being the same as 0845 through the 0808/020 access numbers. So that's probably where the erroneous price has come from. |
Title: 18185 prices for 0870 calls via their freephone No Post by Heinz on Mar 23rd, 2008 at 4:11pm Dave wrote on Mar 22nd, 2008 at 12:57pm:
I have confirmed the 1p/minute rate is correct for weekend 0870 calls (by making a test call). However, another test call during the week confirms that weekday calls to 0870 numbers via the 0808 1 703 703 access number cost 5p per minute, not the 3p per minute shown on the www.18185.co.uk website. Hence, at 4p/minute, using the 18185 prefix is cheaper during weekday evenings. |

Dear all,
Just wanted to post my sincere thanks [smiley=dankk2.gif] [smiley=dankk2.gif] [smiley=dankk2.gif] Yes, I'm now registered with 18185, I can make calls to 0845 numbers (incl Yahoo dial-up shhhh!) and I'm even getting SMS at a penny per broadcast, i.e. send one SMS to many and pay just 1p total. I have registered my mobile so I can choose to have that as the sending number for people to reply to. Really good stuff. Best of all, the bill seems to be much lower already. I will wait to see the full monthly cost when I get full usage going, but I'm one pleased Batman. [smiley=vrolijk_26.gif]I am not worthy[smiley=vrolijk_26.gif] |

No, the entry I was searching for was 0870 9000 247 but the point I was making was that you are likelier to get somewhere if you search on the company name.

That's because 0870 9000 247 wasn't by the entry. There was an unverified entry with a digit missing (0870 900247), hence your search never picked it up. It appears that this company has changed its 0870 number. I have removed the unverified entry and amended the verified one with the new 0870 number. If you come across any other companies which have changed their 08 number or who have another one not listed in our database, the best thing to do is to post a message in the Geographical Requests section, on the existing thread for that company if it exists (and if you can find it). I (or one of the other mods) will endeavour to amend the entry quickly. |
