Title: Confusion over BTs new call charges + Option 2 Post by Subvertjase on Apr 14th, 2008 at 1:45pm
I am on BT Option 1 + my calls go via 18185 or 1899 which has worked well for many years, no calls ever go via BT. I use paperless billing and pay DD so we are charged £10.50 per month.
I logged on to my account today and this pop up offered me a 12 month contract if I go for option 2 I would still only be charged £10.50 a month and alway have free evening and weekend calls. I have no plan on moving line rental as it allows the above services to be used. Although this looks to good to be true I am concerned about wording on the small print and what happens at the end of the 12 month period. I called BT to get some answers but John as he was called in Bangalor could not answer a question with out his script so it got all a bit tedious. I want to know will the cost go up to £10.50 + £2.75 for the package after the 12 months or stay as £10.50 if I renew my contract for a further 12 months. The other question I am curious about, they say discount is via a bill credit scheme, what do they mean. I the past I had this and it was a block amount taken off the total bill then I ended up paying the full package price again. Any help clues and clarity or a person on this package already in the know would be great. Many thanks Jason |

Welcome to the SayNoTo0870 forums Subvertjase.
If you sign up for the Unlimited Evening & Weekend Plan and agree to the 'rolling' 12 month contract, you'll get the £2.70 credited to your bill each month. Then, after 11 months, you'll get a letter asking whether you agree to continue the contract. If you do, it remains 'free' (i.e. the credits will continue). The free evening and weekend calls you'll get count towards the number of calls you have to make to get free Caller Display and/or 1571 (but please don't use 1571). |

...also I was told that, towards the end of the 12 months, (as Heinz says about 11 months) you get invited to renew the existing contract. If you ignore the letter you will automatically have your contract renwed. If you want to cancel you have to let them know. I think this is what Carphone Warehouse is whinging to OFCOM about.

;) Thanks for the welcome and both for the advice and help on the deal, well it sounds all fine to me, I just do not jump to quick I mean who trusts BT.
I will sign over to it which will make good protection if someone in the house calls without selecting from our phones phone-book which has most people installed as 1899 prefixes so it works well but on occasions that slips by. Also thanks you for the link and tip on 1571, we have always said 7 rings is rubbish to get to the phone, it may be worth dumping the service all together like you said. 12 Rings would be great and the engaged tone but they would not make cash out of that, so we would not ever see that. |

May I recommend you join the Orchid user community then. http://www.orchid-telecom.com/Diallers/lcr.htm I'd recommend the V4+ 20% discount if you mention MSE when ordering (if you order online, the discount code is '3') |

I still don't see why BT need to lock you in for 12 month at a time though if they are offering competitive attractive pricing or indeed how Ofcom can permit a company with Significant Market Power to make it so difficult for its customers to move their business elsewhere to another company in this way.
I can only assume that BT are worried about TalkTalk and Be/O2 or whoever else increasing their LLU exchange presence and that this is a way to make it hard for customers to then migrate their business to those rival companies offering far cheaper LLU deals also involving broadband as well as calls. Can anyone else see why BT needs to lock customers in for 12 months at a time when they have no upfront customer acquisition cost like a new broadband connection fee or free broadband router to recover? :-/ |
