0500, along with 0800 and 0808 numbers, are rarely free from a mobile (except in cases where some are, but these are operator specific).

Thanx for the reply to my question about 0500, can you tell me where I can check these numbers before I call them?

It would depend on your provider. O2 provide a list of free 08xx numbers here. If your provider doesn't have a list on their website, you should be able to contact customer services and find out from them.

You can call freephone numbers from your mobile using the dial through number 020 0222 0700 or 020 02220900. These are geographical (London) numbers, so calls will come from inclusive minutes where applicable and be charged at the same rate as 01/02 calls.

Mobile networks i'm sure are obliged to inform their customers the call isn't free.
Which network were you calling from? It could possibly be an oversight as in their network informs users dialling 0800 and 0808 but they 'forgot' to do it for the very, very little used 0500 freephone numbers! |

I have used both these numbers today to call 0500 freephone numbers from mobiles. ( Your find if one does not work on your network the other does ). |

my network provider is T- mobile, do I ring the 0202 nos. before the actual number?
someone else said they had tried and it hadn't worked, I rang the 0500 from my T- mobile network pay as you go and they charged me £2 for a couple of mins. Ang. |

Just to confirm - you did dial 020 0222 0700 - not 020 222 0700 (which is wrong).
In each case, you dial the 020 number first (020 0222 0700 for example) and wait for the prompt. After that, you dial the 0500 or 080x number you wish to call (0500 123456 for example). After a short pause, the call will start dialling. Instead of paying a fortune, you are now only paying normal geographic rates (or free if geographic calls are included in your calling plan). |
