Title: Barclaycard in trouble with Ofcom
Post by SilentCallsVictim on Jun 23rd, 2008 at 9:37pm
Not strictly relevant, but I note that Barclaycard does get a bit of stick here.

Members may be pleased to hear that Ofcom has had them up for making Silent Calls.

There are no details yet, but it is likely that it is their debt collection department that has been harassing those in financial difficulty with menacing anonymous phone calls (possibly with a 0870 CLI).

There are likely to be pieces in the media, but for now here is the source link.

Don't get too excited! Ofcom will not publish the details for some weeks yet, and then some of it will be blanked out. It could be three months before we know if there is to be a fine of up to £50,000.

... out of the revenue that Ofcom lets them take from their 0870 numbers of course

... so if there is a fine then Ofcom will be profiting from these ill-gotten gains

... and there was I thinking that there was no great conspiracy ;)

Just one bit of media from someone who has written about saynoto0870 -

I hope that someone has asked him to do another piece on issues of more concern to this forum!

What is the betting that Ofcom will get this sorted out quicker than anything else?!!!

Are you suggesting that Ofcom personnel may think the great conspiracy is about to be revealed and that they need to protect their future self-interest?!!!

Ofcom has today fined Barclays Bank the "maximum possible fine". This is the way BBC News has put it:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/7637419.stm

Then it goes on to say that this is £50,000............. >:(

UK Regulations are a joke! :'(

OfCom's news release is here.  It doesn't add much to the BBC article, though, except to specify a bit more clearly what the regulations are.

I do wish Ofcom would stop reading this board and following my advice and all the other negative comments that are made about it.
