Title: Information on the cost of 08??? numbers Post by itsquitenicehere on Jul 3rd, 2008 at 2:53pm
Hi everyone
I’d just like to say hello and that while I’ve used this site, as have many friends from other forums who keep on quoting it. I never realised there was a forum on here too – just never looked I suppose! They all know me as a bit of a blether! Anyway I work for a large organisation and we have a considerable influence over a number of smaller organisations some of which have been the subject of mainly negative threads and posts on this site. Please note that I did not say I had considerable influence! Although I do have some. I have been putting together a report for more senior people in the organisation about the use of 08????? numbers and in that was included a table, below.
Cost To Caller (Peak) (Off-peak) Revenue (Peak) (Off-peak) 0844 5p 5p 3p 3p 0845 4p 1p 0870 8p 4p/1.5p w/e 4p 0.5p 0871 10p 10p 4.5p 4.5p 03 Cost to caller is the same (or less) than calling standard 01 and 02 ranges. 070 24p–50p 16p–50p 8p–50p w/e 0800 0p 0p 0p 0p 0808 0p 0p 0p 0p 09 10p-150p 10p-150p 10p-60.5p 10p-60.5p
I think, as part of this report, it would be useful to include to cost to people from mobile phones and from packages people are able to get on their land lines. If I could find out the range of prices this would add considerable weight to the report. I also picked up, from the threads I read, that there were problems with telephoning to these numbers from abroad. Is that all these numbers? From all countries? I knew the table wasn’t quite right as I wrote it, I have a mobile phone too, but didn’t know where to find the information. I hope I can find it here with your help. If this had been posted on any of the other forums I’m on I’m sure it would get a rather odd reaction, however as a rather specialised forum I’m hoping you'll understand. Hope its nice where you are too! |

I have compiled a comparison table of call rates here. ;)

Dave, thanks for pointing me in the right direction, this will be useful.
I must admit I know very little about phone charges, other than what's included in my mobile package and suspect most other people are the same until the bill comes in! In your tables are the 0845 numbers, e.g. in the BT part, in the same cost range as 0844? |

An 0844 number will fall into one of 35 different call types. The most commonly used (in my experience) is "g6". This is the most expensive: 5p/min plus connection charge at all times from landlines. We have also seen some recent examples of local authorities using "g21" - 3p/min. Many published mobile tariffs do not specify their rates, simply giving a range. I do not think that the integrity of Dave's tables would be compromised if he were to give the maximum, with an appropriate comment. |

Because, as SCV says, different 0844 numbers are charged at different rates from landlines. In the main, mobiles charge the same rate for all 0844 numbers, although Orange seems to have some exceptions. itsquitenicehere wrote on Jul 4th, 2008 at 10:45am:
No! That, of course, would be too simple. From a landline all 0845 and all 0870 numbers are charged at the same rate. Some pedants will point out that BT charges a handful of 0870s at a slightly lower rate than the rest. I'm not sure what they're used for, so disregard those for now. 0844 and 0871 are charged at a variety of call rates (from BT landlines). 0844 is upto 5 pence per minute at all times and 0871 is upto 10 pence per minute at all times. As a very general rule of thumb, all landline providers charge each block of 0844 and 0871 numbers at the same rate. In some cases, BT call rates for a particular 0844/0871 number block are different during daytime, evening and weekend periods. Virgin Media has decided only to have daytime and evening periods for non-geographical numbers, so obviously the charges won't be identical there. |

According to my local Cable supplier (Virgin Media) calls to 0844 numbers are charged at 7p per minute

Title: Re: Information on the cost of 08??? numbers Post by Dave on Jul 19th, 2008 at 2:24pm Different 0844 numbers are charged at different rates from Virgin Media. The highest priced 0844 bands are 5 pence per minute at all times as far as I know. The so-called "call connection" fee is usually 7 pence for Virgin Media customers. More information on call charges from Virgin Media can be found at: www.virginmedia.com/callcosts You might like to bookmark that URL. |
