Title: PhonepayPlus to regulate 0871+ from 1 August Post by marksalter on Feb 27th, 2009 at 4:53pm
Just received my PhonepayPlus 'Magazine' and thought I would share this news link here...
http://newsweaver.co.uk/phonepayplus/e_article001359992.cfm?x=bfbScD8,bbnj8wF0 As a regular user of this site in my avoidance of 087 numbers, I hope this is good news. -- Mark |
Title: Re: PhonepayPlus to regulate 0871+ from 1 August Post by farci on Feb 27th, 2009 at 7:10pm In the FAQ to the PhonepayPlus website it defines the number ranges starting with 00 and then sews confusion by not differentiating between 087(0) and the others: 087 087 numbers cost up to 10p per minute from a landline (fixed line phone) but if you call from your mobile call costs will vary depending on your mobile network and you may be charged more. 0871 numbers 0871 numbers are used to provide intelligent call-routing and other services, and allow the organisation you're contacting to receive a share of the call charge. Therefore, calls to these numbers are likely to be more expensive than the cost of calling geographic numbers. Calls to 0871 numbers cost up to 10p per minute from landlines but will vary depending on your phone company or if using a mobile. |

A piece from the Guardian, published on 31 July, on 0871 numbers joining the "premium rate league":

Another article in which Northern & Shell, publisher of the Express and Daily Star newspapers, has dumped its 0871 numbers following the prospect of having to comply with the PhonepayPlus regulations: http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/2009/aug/02/express-newspapers-richard-desmond |

Two good pieces (assuming that one is content that this industry is self-regulating through PhonePay Plus). It is odd that Richard Desmond has opted out of the club. I have always commented that all users of revenue sharing and premium rate numbers might have some difficulty in recognising that they are part of a self-regulating industry that is led by the promoters of Sexual Entertainment Services (as Ofcom classes this major group of providers of PRS). Mr Desmond would have no such difficulty. |
