I have today received a text purporting to come from American Express, asking me to call 08706002612.

Does anyone recognise this number? I am VERY reluctant to call this number, apart from the fact that it is going to cost me money, no doubt I will be asked for various bits of information in order to identify myself.

Any ideas please?

Hi there!

Welcome to the forum.

If you receive anything suspicious text wise from any company, contact your mobile provider. They can give you all the information possible and block it. If you are on Vodafone forward the message to 87726 ( this is free ) and then contact Customer services.

The 08706002612 number is very likely to be Amex.

Have a look at the database where you will find lots of numbers for Amex. There are quite a few numbers starting with 0870 600 but the actual number you have been asked to call is not there.

You did not state what is your connection with Amex, e.g. card, insurance, travel, etc.

Call the geographic number that is nearest to to your involvement with them and please let us know how you got on.

It is indeed Amex.

My connection with Amex is a card. I am reluctant to say much more for security reasons....

Why don't they telephone or email me?
