Does anyone have any advice on a cheap way to phone the USA from a mobile phone;.advice wanted by a visiting student with a payasyougo UK mobile.

Now that's just plain unkind.

You're recommending someone with a PAYG UK mobile uses an 0844 or 0870 gateway number to call a USA number?

Although the 0844 number would cost 1p per minute and the 0870 number would never cost more than 6p per minute to call from a BT landline (but possibly more from other landline providers' lines), they will cost anything from 25p to 50p per minute to call from such a mobile..

What about using a provider such as 18185?

The cost will be the cost for calling the 020 number plus the charges by 18185 itself for dialling the US.
