Title: Nuisance telephone number
Post by Barbara on Jun 18th, 2009 at 11:06am
I don't think there is any reference to this elsewhere so I am posting here.   Three times in the last couple of weeks (plus two missed calls) we have been called by a number 0141 445 6630.   After the first missed call, I googled it without success other than that the code was Glasgow.   When I caught a call, the person said they were doing medical research for Stanford University, suspecting a catch(!), I told them we were on TPS and not to call again; a few days later, same thing, again said we're on TPS, do not call again, I was again reassured the records would be amended.  My husband has just taken ANOTHER call, again told them were were on TPS.  I tried calling the number, the line goes dead.  Has anyone else had this?   I have also forgotten to whom I should report this.  There are obviously quite serious implications here as they are seeking medical information about sleep & vulnerable people could end up giving confidential info to the unscrupulous.  Thought you might all appreciate the warning!

There is a very reputable sleep research organisation at Glasgow University http://www.glasgowsleepcentre.co.uk/ - could be them albeit a little misguided

Hmm..  Nothing on google, but searching some nearby numbers shows that it's not part of a DDI range, as 6633 is an electricians and 6638 a take-away, both in G51, and DDIs normally get allocated in blocks of 10..

A breach of the regulations supported by the TPS should be reported to the Information Commissioner's Office  - http://www.ico.gov.uk/complaints/privacy_and_electronic_communications.aspx.

The definition of "marketing" is very broad and would include recruitment for volunteers and appeals for money. "Based in the UK" does not mean that the primary address of the organisation must be in the UK, an office in Glasgow (assuming that the CLI is genuine) would be sufficient. Furthermore the regulations apply both to the principal caller and any agent engaged on its behalf.

Sadly, the ICO takes a wholly consumerist approach to these matters and would only take action following a large number of similar complaints.

It appears they use various 0141 numbers.
