Hi all,

I would like to ask for your help as I am in conflict with a Greek telecommunication provider. I called a friend who studies at the University of Essex. Due to the fact that I am not British (Greek) I didn't recognise that the phone number was non geographical (08443090500). I have free of charge calls to several countries’ land phones. The thing is that they charged me 56€ = 67£ for a 30 minutes call. I admit that I shall pay something as I now realize that it is not a regular phone number but I believe that this charge is extraordinary. Could someone tell me what is the charge for calling to non-geographical phone number from abroad (e.g Greece)?

Get back to your provider and ask them for a price break down for this call. i.e. how much a minute. They may have made a mistake.

I doubt it. Some years ago, I was charged $2.00 a minute to call a 0870 number from Australia (about 1 pound). That's what started me on this website! The Australian provider told me that there was no way they had made a mistake - it was based on the termination charge made by the UK end of the call.......

Bottom line is - NEVER, EVER call these 08x numbers from outside the UK as there is no way you will know what the charge will be. It bears no relationship to the charge within the UK!

The whole issue of these numbers is (or for 0870, was) the surcharge in the cost of termination. Getting consumers (both those making the calls and those organisations using the numbers) to understand this is much more difficult because they wear blinkers and just look at the most favourable retail prices; usually those from BT.
